In Which A Legal Con Is Still A Con – Collusion (Diversion Book #2) by Eden Winters

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. – Ambrose Redmoon

Oh, Rich… Marv… Sim… Reg… Oh, Lucky, whatever your name is… He’s a man of many handles, some rather unfortunate ones, too, as well as a bit of a mess, but a lovable one he is, at that. Richmond “Lucky” Lucklighter is a pretty simplicated man, when it comes down to figuring him out—straightforward but complicated at the same time.

Lucky and his partner in the SNB, Bo Schollenberger, are back in Eden Winters’ Collusion, the sequel to Diversion, and this time they’re taking on the gray market in the prescription drug industry. The what? Yes, that’s what I said; not the black market, the gray market. Who knew? Not me, so not only was this book entertaining, it was also educational.

Seems there’s a critical shortage of some very crucial drugs in the United States, a shortage that’s being made much worse by the fact there are wholesalers and middlemen who’re buying up those limited supplies and essentially holding them hostage until they can be sold at horribly inflated prices for huge profits. But here’s the kicker: it’s not illegal. Immoral, yes, but not illegal.

Lucky and Bo end up at a children’s hospital this time, posing as employees to try to discover the supplier that’s not only behind the price gouging but is also guilty of exacerbating the problem of the already short supply of the cancer drugs the hospital’s patients so desperately need. Desperation definitely becomes the name of the game this time around, especially when doctors turn to desperate measures, with the best of intentions but with disastrous results for the young patients who end up paying far too steep a price for the substitute foreign meds their given.

Bo’s full immersion in the assigned job of prescription drug buyer for the hospital comes at its own price for the man whose heart never does anything by halves. Paired with the frustration of few to no clues on how to fix the problems in a system where no real crime is being committed, it causes its share of problems between him and Lucky at work. It also adds no small amount of pressure to their already shaky relationship outside of the job. If they’re even in a relationship. Lucky contemplates this a lot along the way, trying to convince himself they’re just co-workers with benefits, but nursing a steady fear that they’re very much more.

Action and danger play out against the growing evidence that Lucky’s heart is caught up in something his head hasn’t quite deciphered yet—namely that Bo is the someone he not only loves but needs in a way he’s entirely unfamiliar with. That’s the very definition of fear for a man whose existence is based on questioning everything, trusting no one, and depending solely upon himself and his own smarts for survival, which is only slightly ironic for a man who’s legally dead. But the very definition of courage for Lucky is coming to the realization that Bo is far more important to him than the fear that might cause him to lose the man who’s come to define home. Seems like Bo just keeps saving Lucky from himself.

If you read Diversion and loved it, you won’t want to miss out on Collusion. Eden Winters has delivered Lucky and Bo to a new place in their relationship, and I’m pretty anxious to see where they’ll go next.

Naked Tails by Eden Winters

Southern summers are indifferent to the trials of young love. – Nicholas Sparks

Oh, possum love. It’s way better than muskrat love, I don’t care what the silly song says.

Why possums? Well, as I hear tell it, this story was born the night Eden Winters had a possum encounter of her very own, and lo and behold, Seth McDaniel and Dustin Livingston were conceived. Their story begins when they’re just little boys and maybe already feeling what would later be called love but at the time was the simple, deep and unmistakable bond between the best of friends. Until that bond was broken by the death of Seth’s parents in a tragic automobile accident, as well as a grandmother whose bitterness over her daughter’s choice in husbands led her to snatch Seth away from the only home and family he’d ever known, to sequester him away in Chicago, isolating him and leading him to believe he was unloved and unwanted.

Twenty years later, one boyfriend lighter, his beloved Auntie Irene having shifted for the last time, Seth returns to Possum Kingdom, Georgia as the sole heir to her estate, what amounts to a rather substantial estate, as well as the inherited leadership role of the shifter clan—as long as he can be convinced to fulfill his legacy and assume the role of Jack to the passel. There are a few fairly substantial obstructions to that fulfillment, however: Seth has no idea he’s carrying the latent shifter virus, has no clue that he’s the heir apparent to the possum throne, nor does he have the slightest inkling that his ancestors were what amount to possum royalty. Upon Seth’s return, his role is being temporarily filled by none other than Dustin himself, Seth’s first love and the boy he left behind with a longing backward glance but little more. Twenty years of no letters, no phone calls, nothing that would lead Seth to believe Dustin ever cared about him at all. Or so he thought until his grandmother’s manipulation is exposed.

Naked Tails is a sweet and sometimes downright laugh-out-loud romance, touched by just the teeniest bit of bittersweet before the happy making ensues. The town of Possum Kingdom is populated by some seriously wonderful residents, including my favorite female character in quite a while, Monica Sims, the six-foot-tall, pull-no-punches, half-breed possum goddess who gets Seth whipped into fighting shape to claim his destiny before the greasy Junior Timmerman can usurp him and turn the town and the entire shifter world on its ear.

This is a story of a man who is finally given the gift of a home and family, even though he didn’t know for sure that’s what he wanted. It’s the story of a man who is given the gift of a past in which he was loved so well, even though that gift hurts to be received too late for him to return it in kind. It’s the story of a man who accidentally becomes a furry, cricket eating, naked tailed marsupial, and becomes the King of his own destiny.

I can pretty much guarantee a passel of human possums—or possum humans—is an all out original in the wide world of shifter romances. These critters were really just a passel of fun.

GayRomLit Contest Kick-Off – Win a copy of Diversion by Eden Winters!!!

It’s FREE FICTION FRIDAY, which means that one lucky person is going to be eligible to win Diversion, the story of an ex-con who chooses the right side of the law over eight more years in prison. Check out the blurb:

Drug dealers aren’t always on the streets; sometimes they sit in offices and board rooms, selling merchandise in official looking bottles instead of little cellophane bags.

When given a choice between eight more years in prison or using his “expertise” to assist the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau’s Department of Diversion Prevention and Control, convicted drug trafficker Richmond “Lucky” Lucklighter takes the sentence with the illusion of freedom. Cynical and unwilling to admit he’s begun to care about his job, he counts the days until his debt is paid. His sole obstacle to getting his life back is the rookie he’s assigned to train before he leaves; a rookie who quotes pharmacy texts, hasn’t paid his dues, and has the obnoxious tendency of seeing the good in everyone – including the target of their investigation.

Former Marine Bo Schollenberger dreamed of becoming a pharmacist and watched the dream turn into a nightmare of PTSD-fueled prescription drug abuse. Battling his demons daily, he wakes up every morning, wondering, “Will this be the day I give in?” To keep his license, he must now put his skills to use for a diversion control task force, deal with a crude partner with too much attitude and no brain-to-mouth filter, and take down a drug lord who reminds him of his favorite cooking show hostess.

The bad guys don’t stand a chance — if Lucky and Bo don’t strangle each other first…

Now, all you need to do for a chance to win your choice of a print or e-copy of the book is leave a comment on this post; it’s that easy. Please be sure to include your email address in your comment so we know how to reach you!

And be sure to watch for the sequel, Collusion, coming in the Spring of 2013!

**One winner will be chosen at random and contacted by Eden Winters. Contest Deadline is 11:59pm Pacific/2:59am Eastern, Tuesday, September 25, 2012**

Countdown To GayRomLit 2012

In exactly one month from today, I’ll be heading to the Indianapolis airport at the bootie-crack of dawn to catch a flight to Albuquerque for the second annual GayRomLit convention, Desire in the Desert. I’ll be showing up at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino with my roomie, Rhys Ford, and a heaping helping of fangirl squee to be spread around equally, guaranteed. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to be going—check out the list of attendees HERE, and you’ll see why.

Between now and the time I leave on October 18th, I’m going to concentrate all my efforts on reading books written by the authors who’ll be attending the retreat. I wish I could say that I was going to read at least one book by every author showing up this year, but that’d be humanly impossible. In spite of my mad reading obsession, I do need some sleep in order to function. But in celebration, I’m going to be hosting some GREAT GIVEAWAYS from some of the authors who’ll be there, including Rhys Ford, Piper Vaughn & Xara X. Xanakas, Amy Lane, and Eden Winters just to name a few, so make sure to stay tuned in.

Trust me when I tell you that for me, this is like the holy grail of fandom. I am going to make every effort to conduct myself with at least a modicum of dignity, but I’m making no promises. As long as I don’t get maced or no one calls hotel security on me, it’ll all be good.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

It’s An Eden Winters Friday – The Wish (2nd Edition), The Newly Re-Released Tinsel and Frost, And A New FREE Short, Valentine Wish

Two years and two months ago, I was brand new to the M/M romance genre, and it was two years and two months ago, with a book that I stumbled upon quite by accident in my frenzy to discover more, more, more books to feed my newly reawakened passion for reading, that I became a fan of Eden Winters and her novel The Wish, which, later that year, also made my Top Picks of 2010 list at Michele ‘n Jeff Reviews.

Why? What made The Wish stand apart from so many of the other books I’d read that year? If I had to name a single defining point that makes The Wish all that it is, I’d have to say it’s because of the singularly romantic, epically wondrous theme that, as William Goldman said in The Princess Bride, “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

The Wish, you see, is a novel about two men, Paul Sinclair and Alex Martin, who share what I’ll call an unintentional bond with each other. They are men who couldn’t be more opposite in personality or lifestyle, as opposite, really, as up is from down and dark is from light. Theirs is, in fact, a hate-at-first-sight story based solidly in misperception, jealousy, suspicion, and outright mistrust of each other’s motives. But, oh but do they have one glorious commonality that will eventually enlighten their shared suspicions and dislikes, then lay them to waste—and that is a capital L kind of Love, a Love that has been both personified and exemplified to each of them individually since they were just boys. And that is the Love that could not be weakened even by death. If anything, rather than destroying that Love, death empowered it, and it is that kind of Love that Paul and Alex so desperately want; although it takes no short amount of time, as well as a bit of intentional interference from several interested parties, for the two men to reach the starting line of their long race toward a happy ending.

So, who are the men whom Paul and Alex hold in such high esteem and whose Love has set the bar against which all other love is measured? That would be their uncles, Byron Sinclair and Alfred Anderson, and their May/December romance is the Love that transcends the boundaries of what lies beyond.

Although Byron is never alive in the pages of this book, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist as a wholly developed and important presence in the story. I’d even go so far as to say he’s the life of this story; at least, he was for me because it’s his death that is the starting line for Paul and Alex and for Alfred, as well. It is the stepping off point for everything that follows, as Byron is the beginning and the end and then a new beginning for Alfred on the journey toward an eternal bond with the man who’d been his touchstone for nearly thirty years.

So see, where most other books offer only one love story, in The Wish I got two, and while one of those romances got off to a shaky start, it’s how it withstood the journey that counted. I can say with complete honesty that it unfolded beautifully and now that I’ve had a second chance to visit these characters, I’m reminded why they remain among my all time favorites; because their stories touched the sometimes cynical part of me that needs reminding true and forever love does exist.

**As an added bonus, Eden has offered a FREE short story, Valentine Wish that takes place in The Wish-verse and centers around two of its minor characters, Isaac Lewis and Thierry Guillaume, and it’s an after-Wish sweet that’s a lovely way to finish off the main course.**

“When the music changes, so does the dance.” – African Proverb

Before a car accident rerouted the direction of his life, before Tony became Tony and he was still Anthony, he was an accomplished ballet dancer and the stage was his world. But as the musical score of his life changed from Tchaikovsky to the pounding rhythms of the strip club where he now dances for tips, Tony learns a valuable lesson: if you give a man a tip, he dances for a day; if you give a man love, he dances for a lifetime.

This short and glorious little story is a tale of two Tonys and how far he travels from the spotlight of a celebrated ballet career to the footlights of a stage where wolf whistles and grasping hands and suggestive comments punctuate the bump and grind he does with his dance pole partner. Stripping can be an aggressive business, especially when there are those in the audience who can’t take their eyes off you, while all the time they’re looking down on you as an object to be groped and demeaned.

Tony’s first set may very well have turned out to be the lowest point of his dancing career if not for the fact that it resulted in the best gift he could’ve ever gotten that Christmas. Meeting Johnny “Frost” Davis might not have happened under the best of circumstances, but it turned out to be a pretty amazing event and one that revealed a lot about how truly wonderfully made these two men are.

What can I say? I want more Tony and Frost. Tinsel and Frost is sweet and sexy and just whetted my greedy little appetite, and I’d love to see more of their before and much more of their after someday soon.

Fallen Angel (The Angel of 13th Street, #2) by Eden Winters

Life is about doing the best with what you’ve been given to work with. It’s about making a difference and offering second chances. It can’t be about saving everyone, because not everyone can be or wants to be saved, but it can be about giving at least one person a chance at a better life. If you can do that, then you’ve already altered the future for the better, and that’s not something many people are given the power to do.

But sometimes you fail, and when you do, you have to go on, and in going on, you have to try to seize every opportunity to live because you never know when “too late” will be. There are times you have to know when to say what needs to be said, and times you have to know when to be quiet and listen, not with your ears but with your heart. You have to be willing to take your own advice and use that wisdom to shape a life that matters to someone, because that someone may be the next great hope in someone else’s life. When you pay that gift forward, it doesn’t stop there but continues to transform for years to come.

The Angel of 13th Street loses his way in Fallen Angel. Noah Everett is so close to losing Jeremy Kincaid to college in the fall, and is so close to losing himself in the process, mired in a past that haunts him, and in the fear that he won’t be enough to protect Jeremy from the dangerous territory in which they both tread, seeking to save the lost in a sea of wayward souls. But how can you save the lost if you can’t find your own way? Noah learns that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, and it’s sometimes the one soul you win who can help you find your way back to what’s most important to you. Noah is forced to let go of the past and face what’s an imminent and unavoidable part of growing old. But along the way, he also remembers who and what the most important parts of his present are.

Eden Winters once again delivers an emotional and moving story, a wonderful continuation to Noah and Jeremy’s May/December romance and all the trials they face, returning with some favorite friends who are more like family, and introducing new characters who brought with them their own challenges.

I hope the ending means there’s a book three on its way soon.
