The problem with writing superpowers is that there are just so many fabulous options. So when I set up the Superpowered Love series, books about folks that belong to a superpowered subculture known as the ‘awakened’, I knew I had to limit it somehow or it’d just spiral out of control. I went elemental: fire, electricity, and ice. I figured that’d give me the best chance to really dig deep and explore all three from different perspectives, and man. I was more right than I knew.

Ice has gotten the most attention so far—totally by accident, but I regret nothing. My first icy hero was Brady from Riot Boy. At first, it’s just little things: icing his beer to make it colder (man, how convenient would that be?) and running icy fingers over someone’s neck for a little heightening of sensation.
But when he’s under threat, turns out he can do a loooot of damage. Oh, and then there’s his villainous past…
In almost direct contrast, there’s Andrew from Losing Better. I’m not saying that the FBI is right and he’s actually a small-town vigilante. I’m just saying that if a bad guy is running away and happens to step into a deep puddle, freezing the puddle to trap his foot is a pretty clever way to leave him gift wrapped for the police. Or it would be. If you were into that kind of thing. Not that he is. Obviously.
There are lots more ice-throwers in the books, and more to come. Like Jody Aguirre, the hero of an upcoming book who’s just had a baaaad run-in with some witch hunters. (Read: people who hunt down superpowered people.) But more on that later. My point is that I just can’t stop with the icy powers, since they seem to be the common ones to pop up in the series. Maybe I’ve got a little Jack Frost complex going on, huh?
Ah, but now to the point! In celebration of the elemental powers of the awakened and this year’s upcoming GRL (yay!), I’ve managed to strike up a partnership with Bunique Beads, my go-to source for shinies. Gretchen has designed a fabulous, handmade bracelet for each of the three awakened elemental powers, and of course I’ve brought the ice one.

There are only two in the world of this gorgeous design. So that’s one for me… and one to give away to one commenter on this post, right here and now. Everyone needs a little ice-sparkle in their life, right?

AUTHOR BIO:
Katey Hawthorne is an avid reader and writer of superpowered romance, even though the only degree she holds is in the history of art. (Or, possibly, because the only degree she holds is in the history of art.) Originally from the Appalachian foothills of West Virginia, she currently lives in Ohio. In her spare time she enjoys comic books, B-movies, loud music, Epiphones, and Bushmills.

I actually used my art history degree last night at a meeting, I think for the first time in my life! BTW, I love this series!

Oh god, Susan, I LOVE when that happens! It makes my whole month. … but it mainly happens when I’m actually in a museum. I need to write more art historians into books, clearly.
Thank you so much!

Oooohhh, I can think of all kinds of wonderful things to do with elemental powers, with ice being only the beginning. That bracelet would look lovely as an accent and accessory to my burgeoning ice powers, wouldn’t it? (hint, hint)

This is the perfect time to be talking about powers associated with ice when so many are dumping a bucket of ice on their head as part of the ALS national fundraiser going on right now! :) Can you imagine having just a tiny bit of the power that males an iceberg so amazing, or has preserved the body of a mastodon for eons? Just a drop, or frozen bit, of that power to use at will, would be so amazing!

I love this series, and I totally want to be an ice elemental. Living in Florida, it would be a very useful element to have. And Gretchen, you did a beautiful job with the bracelet design. And Katey, I can’t wait to read more in the Superpowered Love world.
