"Unbreak My Heart" Wears Its Heart On Its Sleeve

“Only people who are capable of loving strongly can also suffer great sorrow, but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract their grief and heals them.” ― Leo Tolstoy

Three years ago Brett Taylor had it all. Not only did he have his alter ego Brett Black, Country Western star, but he had Walt, the love of his life. Brett lost both of those things all at once. When Walt died Brett walked away from the music and the money, and he decided to deal with his grief his way. This included “running” his ranch, writing letters to Walt, and drowning his guilt and sorrow with copious amounts of Jack Daniels. He thinks this system is working out fine and he isn’t ready or willing to change anything, whether his meddling mother or his foreman like it or not. There is no telling how long Brett would have gone on like this if JT hadn’t been dumped into his life.

JT Campbell has spent the last few years trying to find his niche in life. He tried medical school to please his snobby, upper-crust parents. When he realized that wasn’t for him he decided to follow his own heart and got a degree in psychology. It turned out he couldn’t keep a professional distance from his patients, so he took off on his own. With only the money he makes at his odd jobs and no phone, he makes his way across the country trying to find himself. One fateful night, JT is outnumbered in a fight and his rescuer just happens to be Brett’s mother. JT soon finds himself with a brand new job on Brett’s ranch and a huge crush on his new boss.

Brett has convinced himself that he will never love again. When he starts having feelings for JT, he can’t handle it. JT recognizes that loving Brett will not be easy. He tells Brett they can go as slow as he needs to, and that seems to be the key to helping Brett to heal. The courtship between these two men is slow and steady, and honestly, very sweet. JT brings Brett wildflowers he picked. Brett slowly opens up and shares some tender moments with TJ that only a few months before would have sent him into a drunken stupor.

JT does a little digging and finds out some things he should have heard from Brett. Even though he feels guilty about how he gained the knowledge, he does use it to help Brett heal. Brett eventually finds a balance between honoring Walt’s memory and making room in his heart for JT. Everything is smooth sailing for a while, but Brett discovers a secret JT has kept and he falls apart. It wasn’t an easy road to a HEA for these two but I certainly enjoyed the ride.

Watching these two men fall in love was amazing. They had their ups and downs, but it was honest. I have read a few great books lately, and this is definitely one of them. There are a few roadblocks for them to overcome and the way those roadblocks were handled was powerful.

I highly recommend this book and I hope you will give this one a read. Brett and TJ were wonderful and the supporting characters made it even better.
