Review: Death Gets a Boyfriend is a cute little story about the Grim Reaper finding true love. It was an interesting premise that, in my opinion, did not always line up to my expectations. I did enjoy it but I think some of the plot and relationship between death and his boyfriend was a little lacking.

Death’s been around for a while, killing humans under God’s direction. He does his job without question or with any real emotional attachment. But, for the most part, he’s a happy go lucky guy who likes novelty T-shirts. He has no family, no friends, no lovers, and he’s a virgin. Death seemed a little bland and detached. I’ve read other stories with immortals that were sort of in the same situations, and the emotion and tension leapt of the page.

One day Death gets his kill list, and one name leaps of the page. When he goes to kill, he, for some reason, can’t. Thomas Jacob Neilson is special to Death because Thomas can actually see him. This throws Death for a loop. Why can’t he kill Thomas, why can Thomas see him, and why does Death have these strange feelings all of a sudden?

So, Death and Tommy form a friendship, and their mutual attraction brings them closer together. Death has his first kiss and his first sexual experience. On the outside Death and Tommy made a cute couple, but for me there was no sexual chemistry. They just didn’t do it for me.

Tommy gets called up on the kill list again, and Death needs to pick between the man he loves and his duty.

Death Gets a Boyfriend is a little different take on an immortal tale. As I said before, the story was cute and entertaining if a marginal one. The story was told from Death’s POV, and the writing was not bad. It was a fast read but just didn’t do anything for me and didn’t really leave a lasting impression.
