Blurb: It takes a pissed-off Brahma bull named Shockwave to show rodeo pickup man Marty Fairgrave the cold hard truth about champion bull rider Tripp Colby: Tripp will never leave the safety of his closet or acknowledge Marty in public. Sometimes loving someone just isn’t enough, and after a year of hiding what they are, Marty finally sees the light—and it’s no longer shining on Tripp.

Tripp Colby would do anything for Marty. Well . . . almost. He’s never loved anyone before, and isn’t quite sure how to handle it now. But he knows Marty is his everything, and in order to win him back, Tripp will have to overcome his darkest fears and step into the light.

But no matter Tripp’s intentions, the cost might be too high and the effort too late for these two cowboys to ride off into the sunset.

Dividers

Review: Dorian Bane’s vocal performance of this novel captivated me almost immediately, and I loved how he put his Western drawl to work as he brought these cowboys, Marty and Tripp, to life. It was just the right touch, and I knew the difference between all the characters he portrayed throughout his narration of Pickup Men.

As for portraying emotion…

I felt Marty’s heartbreak in realizing that his closeted boyfriend, Tripp, the man he loved, was not going to risk exposing himself to be by his injured man’s side after the bull attack. When Tripp snuck into the hospital to see how Marty was doing, I heard the resolve in Marty’s voice as he broke it off with Tripp. I also heard the fear in Tripp’s voice as he realized that he’d screwed up big time and lost the man he had come to love.

Boy howdy, there were some intense scenes as Tripp fought to overcome his fears of being outed, and his jealousy over Eric putting the moves on Marty. But when these two cowboys get together, I can’t even begin to describe the sex scenes properly, except to say they were “ride ‘em cowboy” hot! Let’s also add in those tense moments when Tripp went missing and was later found. Oooh, that Scott Gillard was a real homophobic a-hole.

All my “musts” were met by Mr. Bane’s narration, such as voice distinction among the characters, emotions portrayed well, and it helps that this is one heck of a well-written story, which made Pickup Men a very enjoyable listen. Not to mention, I’m giddy with excitement that there are a couple more books that follow Pickup Men. I immediately went to my computer, bought and read Let It Ride and Pulling Leather, so now I’m looking forward to hearing these on audio as well, with Dorian Bane as the narrator.
