Blurb: When a professional relationship turns personal, it’s impossible to resist the law of attraction.
Alec Rowland is a high-flying lawyer in a London firm whose career is his life. He doesn’t have time for relationships and his sexuality is a closely guarded secret. After picking up a cute guy on a Friday night, Alec’s world is rocked to its foundations when his one night stand shows up in the office on Monday morning—as the new temp on his team.
Ed Piper is desperate to prove himself in his new job. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a crush on his boss. It’s hard to ignore the attraction he feels, even though Alec’s a difficult bastard to work for.
Both men strive to maintain a professional relationship, but tempers fray, passions ignite, and soon they’re both falling hard and fast. If they’re ever going to find a way to be together, Alec needs to be honest about who he really is because Ed won’t go back in the closet for anyone.
Review: The Law of Attraction just hit all my hot buttons. It begins with a scene from a bar where a guy—no, not a guy—a man leans against the wall with a drink in his hand, suit and tie slightly askew, eyeing all the possible distractions that could be had for the night… Yeah, you had me at hello. Remarkably like Alec has Ed at hello, also!
The burn of the whiskey tore through him and made his nerves tingle with anticipation. He needed a good fuck; it had been too long. “Drink up then.”
“You’re an arrogant bastard, aren’t you?” Ed frowned, looking at Alec as though he were a puzzle to be solved. “But you want me anyway.” Alec stepped close, right into Ed’s space.
Alec Rowland is on track to make partner in the prestigious law firm he works for. He deserves it. He has worked for it; twelve hour days are his norm. He is good at what he does and frankly, he loves it. He’s a little cold, a lot aloof, and extremely private. But how does a man get that way so early in life? Ahhh, that’s where the excellent writing and characterizations come from in Jay Northcote’s storytelling. We start with instant attraction, move to civility, hit a speed bump with cautious optimism, are broken with compassion, and end with love.
Ed Piper is young, desperate to prove he can be a good lawyer, and part of Alec’s team on a temporary basis. Coming into work his first day on the job, and being faced with the man who left him cold after an incredible night, shakes his belief that the universe isn’t out to get him. Jay Northcote supports Ed’s character with a cast of witty secondary characters, one of whom is his best friend and roommate, Fiona. I loved Fiona. She cuts through all the bullshit in Ed’s life, and just tells him like it is. We all need a Fiona! We also get to meet Ed’s family, and the author did a great job writing a story about a really great guy who comes from a really great family. We truly get to see how Ed is everything that Alec craves, from his family interactions and how they taught Ed to love.
These two equally strong men are desperate for each other, caught in a working relationship and fighting personal demons in their own ways. The push and pull between these two men is delicious, and their rapport keeps the book flowing and the story easy to read. It is also a story of family and how our formative years have such an impact on how those people can shape our lives. Jay Northchote draws such a poignant picture here of the difference a loving supportive family can have on the people we become.
I love this author’s writing because she always manages to get her stories across with realism and a healthy dose of humor in her own very English way. I loved this book. I really think the author should write about men in suits more often! Also, love, love, love the cover by Garrett Leigh. Highly recommend!
