A Sense of Place

My books get around. I’ve set stories in places I’ve lived like Madison (Fields of Gold) and Newport, Oregon (Painting in the Rain), places I’ve vacationed like Puerto Vallarta (Sacred Hearts), roads I’ve travelled (Driving into the Sun), fictional towns like Lacland (Nobody’s Home) and places so exotic I know I’ll never get there (Antarctica – August Ice). But until now, I’ve never set a story in the area where I currently live. The events in Whistle Blower take place here in Northern Wisconsin (as well as in New York City, because why not?). Writing about here had advantages and disadvantages – just like living here does.

I love the Northwoods (does anyone outside of Wisconsin call it that?). It’s a lake district. There are 10,000 lakes in Vilas county alone, most of them quite small. We have plenty of trees, water, wildlife and outdoor recreation. Not much culture or diversity. I know the sights, sounds and smells of this area better than anywhere else. That certainly helped. On the other hand, there really wasn’t much for the guys to do here—other than playing around outside and the um, usual indoor sports.

My favorite thing about living here is the quiet beauty. But every now and then I need to get out of here and head to a city and real life. How about you? What do you love or hate about where you live? Is it a good place for romance? I’m always on the lookout for a sweet spot to set a love story.
