Out of Nowhere, Celebrity Casting
In Out of Nowhere, Colin and Rafe work with a colorful group of teenagers at the Youth Alliance in North Philly. These teenagers are enthusiastic consumers of popular culture, and they talk about movies, music, and television a lot. I loved writing those scenes since I’m also a fan. One thing that the youth bond over is coming up with nicknames for Colin and Rafe based on which actors they think they look like.
Rafe’s celeb look-alike is well established, since he’s been working with the youth for a while:

“Oi, Conan!” someone yells as the doors open and kids start coming in.
“Hey,” another kid says to Rafe, but he calls him something I can’t make out.
“What are they calling you?”
He snorts and rolls his eyes in the kids’ direction.
“Conan, like Conan the Barbarian, and Khal Drogo. They think I look like this actor who played those characters. I don’t know who he is, but they think it’s hilarious. I keep meaning to look it up online.”
“Uh, like Arnold Schwarzenegger?” Rafe looks confused. “Wait, who’s Khal Drogo?”
“Someone in that show Game of Thrones. I’ve never seen it.”

Colin’s, however, inspires a rather dramatic controversy before the kids finally decide:

Mikal pulls out an iPhone crusted with glitter and those plastic gemstone things.
“Final ruling,” he says, and after flipping around on the phone for a few seconds, he holds the screen up to the group. They all look at the screen, then at me, even Rafe.
“Damn,” says Carlos. “You are right.” He shakes his head at Mischa. “Look at what he’s wearing right now.”
I look down at my jeans, black T-shirt, and black work boots.
“Winchester,” Carlos drawls.”

Blurb: The only thing in Colin Mulligan’s life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So do running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he’s gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.
Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he’s ashamed of. He’s dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

About the Author: Roan Parrish is currently wandering between Philadelphia and New Orleans. When not writing, she can usually be found cutting her friends’ hair, meandering through whatever city she’s in while listening to torch songs and melodic death metal, or cooking overly elaborate meals. She loves bonfires, winter beaches, minor chord harmonies, and self-tattooing. One time she may or may not have baked a six-layer chocolate cake and then thrown it out the window in a fit of pique.
