Blurb: An untrained warlock is a dangerous man to love.
On his twenty-first birthday, Evrain Brookes discovers he is an elemental warlock. The spell suppressing his talent lifts and he has to get used to a whole new existence. The protection that kept him safe during his childhood is gone, his skills are wild and uncontrolled and there are those that seek to use him for their own gain.
Evrain’s grandmother is a witch, his godfather another warlock. Between them they do their best to keep Evrain on the right path. He learns that in order to gain control of his formidable powers, he will need to ‘channel’ through a life partner, a process that happens only with consent and through love. But how will he ever find a man prepared to put up with a Dominant warlock for a boyfriend?
Dominic Castine has no idea that Evrain’s grandmother sees him as a prospective partner for Evrain. He tends her garden and she teaches him about herbs—a trade-off they both enjoy. He is drawn to Evrain’s charismatic presence but doesn’t understand why he wants to drop to his knees and submit to him.
When Agatha is murdered, Evrain and Dominic are thrown together as she manipulates them from beyond the grave. Dominic becomes the pawn in a terrifying game between warlocks whose powers he barely comprehends.
In the end, lives will depend on his courage, his willingness to grant Evrain control and the power of love.
Review: L.M. Somerton introduces us to her newest series in Elemental Love, a story about witches and warlocks and other paranormal things. As first books go, it is a very good one. The author does a wonderful job of creating her new world and establishing the groundwork for future novels. I had no trouble believing that warlocks could exist, or making the leap of faith into her fantasy world. If there were some inconsistencies, I am sure that in future books these plotlines will be addressed and explained in the big picture. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next one.
Evrain Brookes comes into his power when he turns twenty-one. As the most powerful elemental warlock to be born in centuries, his grandmother cast a spell on him when he is born to suppress his powers until he can handle them and learn to use them responsibly. On his birthday, he goes to live with his grandmother where she and his godfather attempt to help him control the powers within him. Evrain has a powerful personality as well as warlock powers. A gifted artist as well, he works during the day as a graphic artist (not realizing how his powers are displayed through his art…in a very erotic way I’ll add. Whew!). Evrain is, at heart, a really great guy, though, and his only wish is to protect his family and learn what he can about this new world he has been immersed in. Life is frustrating for him—and, I have to say it was for me as a reader as a result—he flies blind a great deal, the mentors in his life not giving him complete information but doling it out as they deem necessary. Example, if the bracelet allows him to temper and control his magic, why didn’t his grandmother give it to him while she was alive? I cared about this story and little things like that bothered me.
Dominic is a gardener, a very gifted and talented gardener, and Evrain’s grandmother is having him redo all the landscapes around her home. Running into Evrain there, he is drawn to the charismatic man but won’t be bowled over by him. Dominic may be quiet but he has nerves of steel. I loved Dominic and I loved his and Evrain’s relationship. It is well written and the chemistry vibrates off the page. Dominic becomes the focus of this book when he is kidnapped by Evrain’s enemies, and both men must fight to be reunited. This book is about establishing the beginnings of this love story, as well as the place their relationship will hold in future books in context with the paranormal world they find themselves in. I cannot wait for more of Evrain and Dominic! And may I say, holy cow, the sex is hot.
There are avenging warlocks, killers to be caught, “things” watching them, Evrain is trying to learn the extent of his powers, and Dominic is discovering what being at Evrain’s side really entails…and that is book one! This book has a BDSM tag, but it is very mild and touched on only with respect to these men’s relationship, not as a focal point. Warlocks can be very dominant men, after all. Overall, I would highly recommend this book, and I am truly looking forward to more of this series from L.M. Somerton.
