Blurb: Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled genius—and the object of Richard’s deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust.

For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a day’s work as bootblacking—anything for the man he’s devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, David’s seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation.

Review:  Lord Richard Vane was always in control—it was his lot in life—his burden to carry. His behavior must be beyond reproach, and the fact that he was the ipso facto leader of a group of wealthy men who liked to lay with other wealthy men left him vulnerable. Though he longed for a man who was intimately attached to his household—a servant, his valet, whom Richard could never touch, never taste, never hold, or, god forbid, love—David Cyprian. But the heart rarely listens to what a stoic and superior mind tells it, and one innocent touch slams both Richard and David into an emotional abyss where there seems to be no hope of them ever being lovers.

In love but unable to see a future, Richard must somehow keep David at arm’s length, and does so clumsily—wounding David’s pride and shattering his feelings. But now a real threat has come forward, and it may be the undoing of the Ricardian’s–exposing them to the gallows for sodomy. Once again Richard needs the services of his foxy valet, who has managed to clear he and his friends of more scrapes than one can count and yet still manage to keep their secret proclivities a secret. But David has left his employ and is refusing to speak to Richard—will he help just one more time?

A Gentleman’s Position, the third in K.J. Charles’ A Society Of Gentlemen series is, for me, the absolute best one yet! Watching Richard unravel and finally step off the pedestal his friend and former lover Dominic always accuses him of being on was absolute magic. The heat between David and Richard—the fierce, raw emotion and the continual bumbling by Richard as he tries to somehow make a way for them to be together was captivating to read. I love this coupling—it is by far the most satisfying to watch unfold. And then, to realize it may not succeed? The very real concept that Richard is right, that a servant can never be anything but exposed to danger for daring to be the lover to an aristocrat is just the spin this novel needed to make it a bit of a nail-biter in the end.

David Cyprian is by far the most loyal and loving of characters to date in this series. He had so many cards stacked against him—there was no way he could win both Richard’s love and retain his position in his employ, but the idea that he could be his lover and yet not be in his household was simply unrealistic. To watch as these two men fumbled about and nearly lost their all too fragile affair before it even began was delicious torture. However, the absolute best part of this story was when Richard realized he was not just besotted but deeply in love. Being privy to his innermost thoughts and longings made this character utterly human—completely real and finally, we got to see just what this haughty lord was made of, and it was wonderful!

It is no secret that I enjoy this series by K.J. Charles, but this installment was without a doubt my favorite thus far. Each one of these novels just gets better and better and proves, once again, that this author is just a brilliant storyteller. I highly recommend A Gentleman’s Position to you!
