Review: In His Line of Work is a short story that is spin-off of Pick Up the Pieces and Forever in Tinnean’s Spy vs Spook series. This story introduces us to Deuce Pettigrew, who is an ex-marine and seems as though he became a mercenary working for Dr. Pandora Gautier. He has some of his ex-marines working with him: Trip, Ace and Stan. Deuce is on a mission to find Jeanette Van Orden and her son, but when Deuce gets close to finding Jeanette, she always seems to disappear again.
When Deuce sees the obituary for Eric Jameson, a man he has done some work for, he becomes suspicious and does some spying of his own—what he finds in the file in Dr. Gautier’s office makes him resign from mercenary work. With the Jameson’s and Carson’s deaths, Deuce has one thing to worry about and that’s Mark Vincent.
Deuce makes one last call to Trip and lets him know he’s resigned and is going home.
I found myself going back into the Spy vs Spook and The Light in Your Eyes series to try and place Deuce and his men, Dr. Pandora Gautier, and Jeanette Van Orden, but I couldn’t find anything. It left me wondering why Dr. Gautier was searching for Jeanette Van Orden and her son. But then, I caught myself and let the mercenary/motives go and looked at this as the story of Deuce rebuilding his life—he has to leave that other life behind and go home to family, and then decide what he’s going to do to start this new life. But, he still has to think about the threat to his family and friends.
Because this story is short and I really hate spoilers, I am going to leave my review as is. Tinnean created a story that was straightforward and to the point, easy to follow, and a teaser because I wanted to hear more about Deuce and Trip— I really liked it. And it made me want to go back and read both the Spy vs Spook and The Light in Your Eyes series again.

Thank you so much, Maryann! I’m glad you liked Deuce! He’s a new character I created for the book The Best Laid Plans, which is also where we first meet Dr. Gautier. More of this will come into play down the road in the Mann of My Dreams series. (I’d say book 4, but at the rate things are moving along, it might well be book 5. :-P)
It’s funny about characters. When I first wrote Deuce, he was supposed to be a bad guy, and that was all there was to it. But the more I wrote, the more I liked him.
I don’t know if Mark will ever go after him: he didn’t go after Fast Franky, who turned Theo into Sweetcheeks, because he believes in leaving well enough alone. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s never to say never.
