Blurb: Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officer Brock Summers and his fiancé, wildlife rehabber Landon Weir, are preparing for their wedding when someone starts killing moose along a creek in the northern part of Teller County. As the moose casualties rise, human bodies turn up, and the case is taken over by the sheriff’s office. When a Forestry Service Ranger is killed, the service joins the hunt.
All signs point to one of the many photographers who have been taking pictures of the moose. Then Landon discovers a small piece of gold in the creek and they believe they have a motive, but they’re still lacking solid suspects. Bullets fly as they seek to track down the perpetrator while trying to get everything wrapped up in time for their marriage.
Review: A.J. Marcus takes us back to scenic Colorado with the third installment of the Mountain Spirit Mysteries series, where we catch up with Landon Weir, rehabilitator for the critters at the Mountain Spirit Wildlife Center, and Brock Summers, a Parks and Wildlife officer who works Teller County. Besides dealing with wedding plans, Brock and Landon find themselves dealing with their everyday jobs. This time moose are the center of attraction, being killed, injured and drawing crowds of onlookers. Throw in some beavers, owls, bears, and a cat…and they haven’t even gotten their marriage license yet.
Can it get any crazier?
It does.
Landon, Brock, and Deputy Metcalf find themselves facing one of the worst dangers of all—a killer of not only animals but humans. For Brock, he finds himself getting entangled in this case, and he’s not thrilled about accompanying Deputy Metcalf to Denver.
With everything that’s going on, Landon has noticed that as they get closer to tying the knot, Brock is unhappy and avoids discussions about his family attending the wedding. His parents have already made the decision to not attend, and it hurts Brock to think they never really accepted him for who he is. Landon tries to reach out to Brock’s family about attending, but it goes badly.
But soon, Brock starts to realize he has got a family: Anne and Pierre Weir, Kip Ferguson, Dara, Sheila, and Deputy Metcalf. But most of all he has Landon’s love, support and understanding. Plus, he and Landon still have those extra special critters in their lives. Frigga, who still has a major journey to face, Bear and, hopefully, a new playmate—a cat.
A.J. Marcus brings such a wealth of knowledge to this series, from the various creatures that live in the forest to environmental concerns and the legalities of prospecting. As with Eagle’s Blood and Grizzly Discovery, he also shares an abundance of information on all the different creatures that share this earth with us. Moose Fever is also suspenseful and gives us a look at how much danger Parks and Wildlife and Forest Service workers face on a daily basis. Whether Brock and Landon are faced with a killer or trying to deal with saving critters, their love remains solid.
Moose Fever also brings back some really good characters from previous books, who add special moments to this entertaining and informative story.
