With a stressful week on the job behind him, construction company owner Tony Morelli is ready for a night curled up on the couch with his dog, a couple of DVDs, and some takeout to keep him company. When a few guys from his crew convince him to join them at the steamy nightclub Hard Candy, Tony’s skeptical at best about his chances of having a good time. Bumping into gorgeous Lee, though, could change his mind, and they share a drink and conversation ripe with the potential to lead to so much more.
However, Tony doesn’t really do casual, and he has to ask himself if all he’d be left with are sweet memories of a night with Lee–and whether those memories would ever be enough.
Review: Nico Jaye’s Sex and Candy, and its prequel, Hard Candy, are erotic. That’s it. And they don’t pretend to be anything else—they aren’t a deep exploration of Lee and Tony’s relationship; they aren’t an in depth look into the lives of the characters; they’re more a sexploratory fantasy for the couple, and a glimpse of the way they mutually consent to bring a little something different into their relationship.
The real surprise in these stories for me, without giving too much away here, is the explicit trust that’s evident between Lee and Tony, even though we don’t get to spend much time getting to know them. Nor, for that matter, do they spend much time getting to know each other in the beginning. I give all the credit for this to the author’s skill in portraying Lee’s submissiveness and Tony’s confidence in his role as Dom, the confidence to give his sub the freedom he needs to be happy, in a way that lets us know that Lee knows exactly who and where his home is—with Tony. And, of course, then there’s the fun little twist at the end.
If you’re looking for a short, erotic vignette that doesn’t play at being anything more than what it is, Sex and Candy is a sweet and sexy interlude with a couple whose love for each other is big, even if their story isn’t.
