And lo, it was fabulous. And then there was much rejoicing and more than a few sniffles… Ahhhh… men.

So… this is the part with the happy ending. Finally!

The Wake Up Married serial has been one of the most fun episodic series I’ve ever read, hands down. From the moment Will and Patrick woke up in Vegas to mutual hangovers and empirical physical evidence that they’d not only drunk-boinked but also wed while under the influence of alcohol and lust, they’ve taken us on a wild emotional roller coaster ride through the sleepy little burg of Healing, South Dakota, and introduced us to some of the most delightful and, let’s face it, dreadful people (okay, person) there. All while trying to figure out how to get divorced without Will losing the sketchy family inheritance he’s trying to do good works with—in a literal way.

The chemistry between our reluctant couple has been on a slow burn of sexual tension from episode one, which turned into a lovely friendship when all was said and done. And that friendship evolved into love in a way that made you want to hug the guys and tweak their melons all at the same time. But one of the most satisfying aspects of this serial, when the end arrived, was watching Will’s own evolution. Will had a cart-load of psychological baggage he was lugging around because of his addiction, and his issues with Ryan—the poster boy for why some humans should not breed (or, Will’s ex, for short). Not to mention the Mommy/Daddy issues Will was shackled with—I think they’re what the Bible means when it says, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother…” because oh my god, run, don’t walk. Then they turned out to be sort of okay, though, so three cheers for dysfunctional parental units. But Patrick’s greatest gift to Will, as a friend Will needed so desperately, was to no longer allow Will to be a doormat, and teaching him that he deserved to be loved and respected in no uncertain terms.

One of the most heartfelt aspects of this happy ending, hands down, goes to our dear Dr. Hearty McLovemuffin. Who would have ever thought that Patrick, the grinchy genius with the god complex and a soft spot for kids, would turn out to be the one to fall arse over tea kettle in love with his pretend husband? Okay, we probably all did, right? Because the grumpier they are, the harder they fall, and all that romantic business. Patrick was the cause of all the smishie sniffles in this episode, and I swear his heart grew three sizes. Maybe twelve. And having the chance to see him just be…human…was a beautiful, beautiful thing to behold. Patrick melted my own wee heart and I was so over the moon to see him get his happy ending.

And that’s why I read this episode twice. Leta Blake and Alice Griffiths didn’t slap together a simple happily-ever-after here. They pulled out all the romantic trope-y stops but didn’t turn them into annoying clichés. The ending to this series was a happy and sexy heart-tugger that pulled everything together in a satisfying way. And yes, there were sniffles because I got something in my eyes, dammit (it’s called joy and feels). The authors gave Will a happy ending he could take charge of and embrace, even if it hurt both he and Patrick in the process, and it was joyous. They made Patrick a hero who swept in and saved Will from himself. And Patrick, well, he kind of needed rescuing in return (though he’d never admit it), so Will gets to hero up too, and then, true love won and all was well with the Whos down in Whoville.

The Wake Up Married serial built a town from the ground up and populated it with everyday people who dole out wisdom, happiness, frustration, friendship, and sometimes just shovel out the crap because those people exist in real life too. If you’ve been waiting until the last book was released before you started this series—because believe me, I get it—start the reading now. It’s a bumpy ride, but those are the most fun to go on, and this ride was a hoot and a half.
