Review: Danny Avers never left his small hometown of Hotchkiss, Colorado. Regardless of the accident that the townspeople blamed him for, he became a teacher and cared for his sick father. He changed his ways for the better, and still deals with the physical and mental damage from the accident. In a way, it’s like self-punishment that Danny lives a solitary life.
Harlan Quinn left the small town of Hotchkiss behind, and he changed for the better too. Harlan joined law enforcement in Denver and Los Angeles, but returning to the small town as the Sheriff brings him trouble from the get-go.
Dan and Quinn have a history together, from their high school days twenty years ago—Dan was Quinn’s lifeline, growing up. Quinn makes the first move and starts visiting with Dan; they talk about old times and what’s been happening in their old town. As they get a second chance to rekindle their friendship, and eventually their love, they find that small towns are not so forgiving. Quinn doesn’t want to hide how he feels about Danny, and wants to show Danny how to live again.
With multiple lab busts and false accusations, Quinn and Danny find themselves in danger, not just from an unforgiving town but from people with power. BA Tortuga brings us a mystery with danger and suspense in Old Town New. There’s drug manufacturing and distributing, murder, extortion, small town corruption and prejudice–the plot is good and the story pace just right. But, most of all, the author gives us two MCs who are well developed. There’s enough information from Quinn’s and Danny’s pasts to see Quinn as still being the “bad boy,” and Danny’s change to being shy and timid.
This is also a story about overcoming the past and getting a second chance at love and a better life. And, I need to mention one other character, Rags, who adds more love and laughter to their lives.
