Lisa: We’re so pleased to welcome author Heloise West today, on the tour for her newest novel, Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses.
Hi, Heloise, let’s start by having you tell us a little bit about the book, and about yourself too.
Heloise: Heart and Haven is a series concept born of the first novel, Hitting Black Ice: Love on the Run, romantic suspense as danger tightens around the two main characters. Once Alex and Hunter begin to recover from the trauma in the first novel, they find that the repercussions from the past still have a hold on them. The gift of a vacation in the Caribbean is meant to bring them together so they can do more romancing and relaxing in safety. I love the movie Key Largo and took inspiration from that for the story.
My background? Reader, English major, writer. I’m boring. I garden, live with cats and boyfriend in northern New England, and work in Healthcare. All the action and excitement is in my head.
Lisa: Was there a basis for you story? A previous experience, or something else?
Heloise: I love the Caribbean, though I’ve never been to Saba. One of my favorite movies is Key Largo, though that takes place on the Florida Keys. I used some of the elements from that movie—trapped by a hurricane with criminals, everyone desperate to escape before things get even worse.
Lisa: What skills do you think a writer needs?
Heloise: Not algebra, thank goodness. Perseverance and caring about words, story, and craft. A certain amount of masochism. Curiosity, and the ability to assimilate new things to suit the story and characters, and to go after the details.
Lisa: What for you is the perfect book hero?
Heloise: We talk about tropes, what sells, what’s hot. There’s tropes and subgenres of romance I don’t read as a rule. Take BDSM. But I loved to pieces Alexis Hall’s For Real. I don’t read vampires, but I love Jordon Castillo Price’s Channeling Morpheus. So a character who makes me read out of my comfort zone is definitely my hero.
Lisa: That has to be one of the best answers I’ve ever heard to that question, and I couldn’t be in agreement with you more.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Heloise: It would be nice to write faster, but it works how it works.
Lisa: Finally, what’s your favorite childhood book.
Heloise: Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, if I can only name one.
Lisa: Thanks so much for stopping by, Heloise, it’s been a pleasure. Where can we find you on the internet?

Blurb: When Hunter and Alex are given the vacation of a lifetime, it’s a chance for them to pay attention to romance and get out of the path of danger. The tiny Caribbean island of Saba is gorgeous, the first to have marriage equality, and the Sabans are the nicest people on earth. There’s lots of rum poolside for relaxing and a room with a mirror on the ceiling for passion. Hot karaoke nights, cold beer, and new friends.
Their new friends Orfeo and Max, and Max’s sister Talisha, confide a troubling secret, and, of course, Alex and Hunter want to help. As a hurricane bears down on them, a dead body surfaces, and then a purple backpack loaded with stolen jewels. The jewel thief Derek Boyd wants his boyfriend and his stolen jewels back at any cost and a Russian mobster wants his wife’s jewels returned…
Alex and Hunter’s vacation paradise just turned into hell on earth.

TBH I’m actually in the process of arranging my dream vacation now. I’m talking about hitting up Japan, Korea, Thailand and then hopping over to geek out in England, France, Germany, and ending out the saga in Ireland (will be taking that trip with my 3 of my girls).
