Believing Blue: An Interview and Giveaway with Author Nicole Colville

Lisa: Please give a warm welcome to author Nicole Colville, joining us today to chat about her new book, Believing Blue, book three in the Manchester Ménage Collection.

Thanks for joining us, Nicole. Why don’t we start by having you tell us five things we don’t know about you that you think we should?

Nicole: 1.) I have slight OCD about certain things, mainly organizing. I like my cupboards to be pristine, think cans all lined up, and I have to buy things in threes. That could be why I like ménages lol I like threes.

2.) I suffer from Chaetophobia – a fear of hair. No!! It’s real. People don’t believe me, and it’s weird I know. It’s mainly body hair, hair on the head is fine, but even on certain animals I have issues stroking them. Anything rough it’s a no-no for me. And don’t even get me started on the hair stuck in brushes or down the pug hoke *gag* I hate it. It holds me back a lot in life, and my biggest things is beards. I can’t even look someone face on if they have one, which is just plain rude.

3.) I’m a huge Trekkie. I know. Sorry. I grew up with the Next Generation and attended conventions… My first crush was on Data, which unsurprisingly has led to my love of unemotionally and cold men lol

4.) I hate goats cheese. Like HATE it. Ugh

5.) I smell aniseed and run! Long story short… I got really drunk on Pernod, enough said.

Lisa: Do you remember a defining moment in your life where you thought, this is it, I want to be a writer? Is there an author or a book that inspired your desire to tell stories too? Tell us about how you ended up where you are as a writer.

Nicole: I’ve always loved messing around with stories, even from the age of ten, and wrote several short stories in my teenage years. I stopped due to life getting in the way and then I became ill. I had months off work. I started reading again. I love Ann Rice, and read through all her books again, then I started to pick up more erotic work and found Fifty. After reading that and hearing her story I thought about how my love of writing and just decided to pick it up. I really have a lot to thank being diagnosed with Crohn’s because without it I wouldn’t have started writing again.

Lisa: Let’s turn the conversation toward Believing Blue. I have to ask you this since it’s the first sentence in the blurb, because I’m fascinated by fate vs free will: how did your thoughts about fate vs free will figure into how you wrote this story?

Nicole: Oh, that’s a tough one. I do believe in karma, what you put out you get back, I also believe everything happens for a reason. Good and bad, look closely and there’s always a reason or a connection, though that connection sometimes doesn’t appear for years, it’s still there. Free will versus fate… hmm, I like to believe in both and I think they work together. Just because the option is there, you don’t have to take it. There’s always free will. No one can be forced by anything or anyone to act against their will. I just see it as a thin thread connecting our lives in ways which most of will never see. Perhaps it’s Buddhist in me, but I like to believe, I just don’t have a set of rules I believe in :D Belief is good. If it gets you through the day, then that’s awesome and I don’t care what it is as long as you’re happy with it.

Lisa: I would imagine building a believable romantic relationship from scratch presents its challenges, and can’t begin to imagine what it’s like to create a bond between three people in a romantic relationship. What are some of the pros and cons of writing couples vs throuples?

Nicole: That’s the hardest part, making it believable. And each set of men are different and take their own journey through the book so there’s no set formula I can follow. I have to go through it with them on the sidelines and be as surprised as you are when things happen lol

Ménage is obviously more difficult to write due to the third, but like any relationship they all have their place and duties and as the relationship grows, it becomes clear how they all work together. Page wise I take more on ménages as I like to give each member their own voice. I think it helps us connect to them all and we see from their own eyes what’s going on. Sex wise in a ménage takes more thought, just like in real life, there’s extra hands and limbs, and writing wise you have to be careful you don’t have tons of.. he took his hand and held his length while he….. you need names, more than in most or it’s easy to get lost.

Lisa: Without giving too much away, what’s the one thing you would point to that explains why Kellan, Valentino, and Blue work together?

Nicole: They each are able to support and encourage the other in ways which aren’t available to just one man. They also love each other equally and have that same strong pull to be with the other. It’s easy for this book to become a love triangle, and it could have gone very differently if not for the desire to and need for all three to work and make the relationship continue. Love is limitless. Sometimes it’s hard for us as such jealous people to understand how we can love and desire two or three people in the same way as we do one. But I always refer to children, we love each one the same, and we see and understand the difference in their personalities. polyamorous relationships are the same.

Lisa: Is there one scene in the book in particular that you loved writing? What made that scene memorable and special?

Nicole: Oh God, I love Blue and his twin sister AKA The Things. I honestly want to do a m/f book with those two lol Blue had me laughing in my office so many times. I would read them back just to laugh again. He was a breath of fresh air between the deeper parts. He says what he feels and doesn’t apologise for it. He has a unique outlook on life, and such a confidence in what he does.

Lisa: Would you like to tease us and share a little info about current WIPs and upcoming releases?

Nicole: I love to tease. I’m in the middle of the next Knights to Remember book: Krane. OMG I adore Krane. I think he may be a little too dirty though lol As I write I blush lol He’s someone very different for me to write about. He’s huge, 6.5 and well-built. The first chapter he had me on the Rugby field and covered in mud and I was like ewwww no! He’s someone I’ve quickly fallen in love with and I can’t wait to share him with you.

So, he was growling now, it seemed.

Krane would kick his own arse when he got out of here for pulling this stupid macho shit.

Those slim fingers were caressing his tense muscles, gently moving further up Krane’s thigh. “Do you like me, Krane?” The sultry, velvety caress of Bailey’s voice answered his own question. He was aware of how Krane tensed and breathed faster, must have seen the colour filling his cheeks as he warmed up with each inch Bailey’s hand travelled. “I like you.” Bailey moved closer, brushing his knee against Krane’s inner thigh, gently swaying it as he continued to lean closer. “Why shouldn’t I touch you?”

“Because—” Krane took hold of Bailey’s calf, the supple, warm leather of his boot teased him to touch more, and without thought, he smoothed his palm down to Bailey’s ankle, holding it a little firmer as he held the intense look. “I’m about an inch away from fucking you over this bar.”

Kellan gritted his teeth together and stood up. “I won’t leave you like this.”

“Get the hell out!!” Valentino gripped the base of his nose, rubbing it gruffly. His eyes snapped shut, but not quickly enough.

Kellan spotted the misty glimmer in them. Whether his tears were caused through sheer frustration or sadness, it didn’t matter. Kellan couldn’t leave. He’d have to be forced from the house by an armed response team. “No!” Kellan held his shoulders firmly. “I won’t leave you.”

“God-damn it, Kellan.” Valentino’s eyes flew open, and Kellan’s hands were thrust from him with a jerk. “You’re such a pain in the arse.” He leaned forward, almost hissing his words out against Kellan’s lips. “Why don’t you just leave me alone, huh? Why do you continue to push me when I don’t want it?”

Kellan’s body brushed against Valentino’s firm flesh, and he cursed himself for responding so quickly. “Don’t lie and say you don’t want me here when I know damn well what you want.” Kellan didn’t really know for sure, but there was a heat and need between them which couldn’t be ignored anymore. Valentino needed him, and Kellan was willing to hand over whatever he could to fulfil that need.

Valentino turned those teal green eyes on Kellan’s, a soft growl spilling from his lips. “You’re a fucking tease! A tease, Kellan.”

Kellan was about to come back with a response, like how he had no idea he’d been teasing Valentino, but he was halted by two hands on either side of his head and Valentino’s mouth being forced against his. He stopped breathing, too stunned to act. Valentino had his face clasped tightly to his, those full lips hitting Kellan’s hard and fast, his tongue licking and seeking entrance inside.

A white hot shot of lust spiked through his body and every thought other than being against this writhing, sexy man disappeared. Kellan grabbed hold of Valentino’s hips, rushing him up against the wall and taking ownership of his mouth with a grunt.
