Blurb: Into the Paranormal World: To everything there is a season, including a time to lay down arms and to love.
Jeremiah Tully lost his sister when a shifter attacked them while camping with friends. He blames himself…and rogues, believing they are a danger to society. When he finds a group of like-minded people who call themselves hunters, he joins up and spends three years helping them hunt, capture, and sometimes even kill shifters and vampires. Then a few new guys show up, telling tales of demons, and how they want help capturing some. Jeremiah doesn’t believe their tales, but when the demons attack, Jeremiah quickly turns into a believer. He flees the building, but then is chased down by one of the monsters when he crashes his dirt bike. When he wakes in some kind of clinic run by gargoyles, he thinks he’s a dead man. Instead, he learns that some humans live side by side with the gargoyles as mates, and one of the gargoyles, Grateman, is claiming him. While Jeremiah realizes he does have an odd attraction to Grateman, can a mating between a gargoyle and a hunter really work?
Review: Claiming His Hunter is the fifteenth book in this series, but can be read as a standalone as there is enough information to understand the relationships.
Grateman and his fellow gargoyles are after a group of hunters that are going after shifters and other paranormals. After one shoots Vane, another takes off on a motorcycle chased by Grateman, but he crashes and is seriously injured. Grateman recognizes the man, Jeremiah, as his mate, by scent, and takes him back to the hunters’ compound, and the doctor, to save him.
After everyone is stable, both Jeremiah and Quinn—the other hunter who shot Vane—are taken back to the gargoyle compound to recuperate and hopefully provide information about the hunters so that the gargoyles and the rest of the paranormals can stop them. Jeremiah is afraid at first, but then he realizes he feels an odd pull towards Grateman. He’s not gay, but he feels comfort and strength and affection from Grateman, and he likes that. He’s in pretty bad shape, and the doctor and Grateman are doing their best to keep him comfortable so that he can heal. He’s a bit freaked out by the pregnant gargoyle mates however.
When his fellow hunter, Quinn, discovers that Jeremiah is there as well, there is trouble. But Jeremiah is still in bad shape, and he’s not so sure that he doesn’t want to help Grateman and stay with the gargoyles. He’s not a bad man and he’s really been trying to do the right thing.
I really liked Jeremiah in this book. He’s got his own story, and he’s evolved even before he’s taken in by the gargoyles. Grateman is patient and kind, both to Jeremiah and even to Quinn. I liked the two of them together, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens with the next episode of this series. And honestly, I want more gargoyle babies to hatch! Come on Charlie Richards, we need more hatchlings, not just eggs. ;-)
