Our Inspiration for Elemental Evidence
Bellora: When I was a youngster I began searching for what I believed. I wasn’t sure what that was or where it would take me. I read many books on religion and spirituality and after something of an existential crisis I decided since nothing fit me perfectly I would make up my own thing. I guess that was the storyteller in me even then. So I looked for one thing, just one thing that resonated enough with me that I could hold onto it and build something out of it, and that one thing turned out to be the four classical elements, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Honoring the elementals changed my life in amazing and sometimes surprising ways and I’ve carried them with me all these years. It was blind luck that my writing partner also had an affinity for the elements and it seemed natural to us to write a book with the elementals as a theme.
Sadie: I was fortunate enough to grow up with parents who believed in letting me find my own way when it came to matters spiritual. I briefly went to a liberal Methodist Sunday School and it didn’t take me long to file religion alongside my belief in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.
I was a happy atheist for a good many years until I met two lovely people, Helen, who was my writing partner for many years and remains my dear friend and Laura, a sweet vivacious young lady I worked with and also grew very close to. Both were practising witches. Helen as a solitary practitioner and Laura working with a circle. They introduced me to the practice of honouring the Elements and led me to a realisation that I’d been unconsciously practising a form of paganism for many years. My spiritual muse was nature and still is, and paying regard to the primary Elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth seemed very natural to me as well. Without them we would have no life to celebrate. And so our modern Elementals were born. Their skills owe more to science than magic but cross the slender boundaries between.
Bellora: Sadie and I have been writing paranormal stories for years and when we first started talking about starting a new series I knew I wanted to do a detective series. I love mystery and suspense and I’d been wanting to write in that genre for a long time. It was an easy step for us combine the two. We also knew right from the start that we wanted something a little different on the paranormal end of things and I think that’s a big reason why we choose to have our characters the descendants of elemental beings, each with their own unique abilities passed down through the blood line.
Sadie: We had a lot of fun deciding how Elemental gifts were going to work before actually sitting down to do some writing. Fortunately we got to develop these ideas over four books so the first concentrates mainly on the MCs, who are Fire and Air Elementals respectively. The books also play on how different cultures all respect the four principal Elements in diverse ways. Jake, who is a Fire Elemental, is Native American. He was raised with one foot in the modern world and one steeped in a rich cultural and spiritual past. Ilmarinen is an Air Elemental, the son of a doctor and a rocket scientist and raised as an atheist. He is also the great grandson of one of the last Legendary Elementals, people with extraordinary gifts, thought lost to modern times. His lack of spiritual belief is sometimes at odds with Jake’s trust in his Native spirit ancestors. We had a challenge at times, keeping Mari sympathetic, as he can be crushingly blunt when he thinks he’s right. Which is often.
Bellora: The elemental theme really did weave it’s way through every facet of the series. It reflects in the MCs backgrounds, their cultures, their personalities, their abilities. It’s in the plot of each book, the order of the books, and the overall tone of each. I especially like how it affects their personalities though. Jake is not just hot head. He’s got his fiery personality under control. So he’s passionate, warm, sometimes steamy and intense. You only get to see little flickers of an explosive temper from him. Mari could have been a typical air head. Instead he’s very cerebral, thoughtful and inquisitive. His wit is razor sharp and he can talk circles around everyone. You can’t tell we love these guys, can you? We’re hoping you’ll love them too.

After a handful of embarrassing encounters, Jake is ready to resign himself to staying under the radar, but when a colleague’s brother goes missing, he and Mari must work together to find him. As they dig into the inexplicable disappearance, Jake is impressed with Mari’s competence and unique skills, and even more impressed by his ability to wrap Jake around his finger.
