Blurb: For Nate Koehn, the worst part of being a reaper is maintaining his compassion without becoming too involved with the souls in his charge. He’s always been sensitive to others’ hurts, and there is no hurt bigger than death, with which he’s already intimately familiar. The learning curve is steep, but the perks of the job—spending the next 300 years with the love of his life, his husband Mitch Seeker—are unmistakable. For Nate, death is a lifelong commitment.
Then Mitch is assigned to reap a serial killer’s victim.
Mitch and Nate are willing to go to just about any lengths to bring the killer to justice, but Divinity has a plan for everyone, and the reapers are at risk of being terminated themselves if they meddle too much. Mitch knows better than to tempt fate, but Nate isn’t wired to sit idly by while innocent people lose their lives to a vicious killer.
Nate sets out to balance the scales of justice for the souls in their charge, but what happens when he becomes the killer’s bug in the web? Can he stop a killer without exercising his own free will or putting those he loves in the crosshairs? Only Death knows, and he’s not talking.
Warning: Contains graphic descriptions of violence, which may be too intense for some readers. Reader discretion advised.
Review: I have to say, this series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. AJ Rose gives us a whole new way to look at the job of a Grim Reaper. I loved every minute of it.
The story picks up a year after Reaping Havoc ends. We met the two main characters, Mitch and Nate, in the first book. Mitch is a reaper. It’s part of his family history and his fate. Nate is the human he fell in love with. Due to special circumstances, Nate is now a reaper himself, and together they do their duties, guiding the recently dead to say goodbye to their loved ones before showing them their door to the afterlife. All is fine and well until they stumble upon a local serial killer. Mitch and Nate’s world is about to be turned upside down and sideways.
What I loved most about this book, besides the storyline, is the writing. While the story itself has dark elements, Ms. Rose has the tendency to keep it on the lighter side, with quirky lines and comedic relief. It’s a quick paced read that keeps you on your toes the entire time, wondering what’s going to happen next. Never a dull moment.
I also loved that we get some more insight on the reaping world. Mitch and Nate’s boss, Katherine, gives us some Reaping 101. There are a lot of rules that must be obeyed, and breaking those rules can have some serious consequences. I love the entire world the author has created. It’s fun, unique and just fun to read.
As for the mystery, I would have liked to have been kept in the dark a little longer. We knew right away who the serial killer was. It was so obvious. I don’t know if the author’s intention was to make it a no-brainer, but I figured out who it was from the get-go. I would have liked to work a little harder at guessing who the killer might be.
While I really enjoy Mitch and Nate—both are amazing characters with a wonderful relationship—I also like the secondary characters as well. Each one brings so much to the story; it wouldn’t be the same without them. From Mitch’s father, Charles, to Nate’s friends Wes and Troy, and to their fellow reaper Sebastian and his husband, Richard, all add that special something to make this story a great read.
All in all, I’m in love with this series. It’s so much fun to read. It has a great balance of dark and light that will appeal to all readers. If you’re a paranormal fan, this book is for you. Don’t miss out. I highly recommend it.
