The Birth of a Calf

I’m here to celebrate the release of A Second Harvest published by Dreamspinner Press.  This is the first book of a new series called “Men of Lancaster County”, which will focus on… wait for it… m/m romance stories set in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where I reside.

My husband and I bought a twenty acre farm here in 2010. Lancaster County is a heavily rural area with tons of small family farms still in operation.  There are loads of Amish and Mennonite in this area. And it’s quite beautiful green, rolling countryside with big barns, stone farmhouses, livestock, and crop fields.

A Second Harvest is a May-December romance featuring a Mennonite farmer whose wife is deceased and whose two children are in college.  His neighbor dies, and her thirty-year-old nephew moves into her house to get it ready for sale. Christie Landon is blonde, very attractive, and definitely a city person. He’s also kind and artistic and different than anyone David has ever met in his entire sheltered life.

Since they both live alone, Christie begins cooking meals for the two of them, and they develop an unlikely friendship. But eventually David must confront the fact that Christie is a gay man who is interested in being more than his friend. David has to figure out how he feels about that, if what he feels for Christie is worth casting aside all he’s ever known.

In the book there’s a scene where one of David’s cows is giving birth, and he invites Christie over to watch it. Christie is very excited, because he’s never seen a live birth before.

This scene is based on the birth of our calf Bessie in 2011. When we moved to the farm, I bought a heifer, a pretty Jersey we named Trueheart, and she was pregnant.  At the time, I had never seen a live animal birth before, and we were watching her closely every day, afraid we’d miss it and the calf would be born in the middle of the night. But one day around noon I noticed True was panting and had some mucus coming out. She gave birth in a very short time, about an hour.

It’s so amazing to see a new life being born.  I think that sense of unlimited possibilities and hope is instilled in the book. That was my intention anyway. It’s never too late to get a new start on life, even for a lonely farmer in his 40’s.

About the Author

Having been, at various times and under different names, a minister’s daughter, a computer programmer, a game designer, the author of paranormal mysteries, a fan fiction writer, an organic farmer and a profound sleeper, Eli is happily embarking on yet another incarnation as a m/m romance author.

As an avid reader of such, she is tinkled pink when an author manages to combine literary merit, vast stores of humor, melting hotness and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story.  She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time.  She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, three bulldogs, three cows and six chickens.  All of them (except for the husband) are female, hence explaining the naked men that have taken up residence in her latest fiction writing.
