Blurb: Alastar Connors’s studies of the changelings who live in the forest beyond the Great Iron Wall have been greatly aided by his friendship with the mischievous Gadhar. As a faerie creature, Gadhar’s soul takes a frightening shape, but he’s always behaved as an eager-to-please puppy around Alastar. When an intimate moment leads to an unexpected revelation, Alastar fears he may have jumped to some ill-informed conclusions about his friend. In his attempts to fix the misunderstanding, Alastar stumbles into the kind of trouble that even a quick-witted changeling might not be able to get him out of.

Review: Although this book is short, it’s a well-written story with great characters, fantastic world building, and a strong plot. I enjoyed Alastar’s journey beyond the Great Iron Wall to visit the changeling society and his changeling friend, Gadhar. While most humans fear the faerie side of the wall, Alastar is comfortable around the riddle-filled, mischievous Gadhar. However, he isn’t all he appears to be, and Alastar risks losing him forever when he jumps to conclusions about his friend.

Gadhar was so fun to read. He’s exactly like a rambunctious puppy in behavior, and I found it endearing, just as Alastar must have. His riddles are fun, and while I figured them out quickly, Alastar just didn’t take the hint.

Seeing the two different societies on opposite sides of the wall was fascinating. Though the story is short, Cassia Rose set up the societies with enough information to explain to readers what was happening, but not overshare.

That said, I would love to read more in this world. Were the author to write a longer sequel to this story featuring Alastar and Gadhar, or even others with them in the background, I would happily read it. There are many things I still want to know about the Iron Wall, the forest, and the humans who inhabit the wall.
