Blurb: Justin Briggs can shout out directions all day on his job as a traffic cop, but put him in front of a hot guy, specifically firefighter Rock Sparks, and he clams up.
Rock finds Justin confusing. While saving a busload of children hanging off the edge of a highway overpass, the cute rookie is cool and confident. But when Rock tries to chat him up, he stutters and chokes. Frustrated, Rock teases Justin, and boy, is his temper hot.
Though Rock and Justin share a steamy kiss, Justin keeps his distance, still tongue-tied. Then, when Justin is injured on the job, Rock takes him to the hospital, and some of the barriers start to crumble. But getting his enigmatic boyfriend to open up brings up more questions about Justin’s past.
Review: Heat Under Fire is book four in the By Fire series, which was first published in 2013 (I believe this may be the first series where Andrew Grey introduces us to the town of Carlisle). This story is a quick, easy read with a little tension, romance and two really great MCs—police officer Justin Briggs and firefighter Rock Sparks.
Justin and Rock don’t hit it off right away. In fact, Rock tracks Justin down and confronts him on his snotty attitude. Poor Justin. He can talk about work, but he gets nervous and tongue tied whenever the conversation gets more personal. He just figures maybe he’ll be alone for the rest of his life.
Just when Justin thinks maybe he’s found someone he would like in his life, he has to deal with an overbearing and interfering mother (who’s already made a mess of his life) and sisters who are just as easily manipulated by her. Needless to say, Justin and Rock get into a little tiff and Justin thinks the worst. But the guy’s come to a meeting of the minds and give us a HEA.
Paul Morey did really nice narration of the story. He has an excellent reading voice and gave the characters their own distinct voices. He also put lots of emotion into the characters of Arlene, Justin’s mother, and Justin himself.
