After the release of First Omega, there was some concern among readers that River and Josiah would take another mate. The question is, would Josiah go for that? He makes it pretty clear in First Omega that he wouldn’t, and River agrees to leave it entirely up to Josiah.

Raised among monogamous humans, Josiah is unlikely to ever want to share River with anyone; however, he does come to understand the werewolves and to even respect their polygamous relationships. Don’t fear that Josiah and River have anything to do with the title of the third book, though.

In Third Mate, the subject of soul bonding comes up as coyote shifters all have a soul bonded mate they may or may not find in their lifetime. Although weighed down with the increasing discord in the pack, Josiah still finds time to play confidante to Foster, who, separated from his pack, has his soul bonded mate on his mind.

Standing uncertainly in the middle of the room, Foster fidgeted with the hem of his shirt. “I’ve been hearing something. Late at night.”

Josiah waited patiently. Foster was obviously both agitated and embarrassed.

The coyote shifter raised his eyes to meet Josiah’s gaze. “A call. Far away. From another coyote.”
Josiah frowned. “Someone you know? From your old pack?”

Foster shook his head. “A stranger. But I feel like I know him, too. It doesn’t make sense, I know, but I’m telling you how it feels. It’s like this coyote is calling to me.”

Realization dawned. “You mean your true mate?”

Foster looked relieved he didn’t have to say it. “Yeah.”

“But…how could it be?” Unease wormed its way into Josiah’s gut. It was highly unlikely Foster’s true mate was out in the woods somewhere calling to him at night. And if it wasn’t him, then who?

“I’m certain it’s a coyote,” Foster said, as though reading Josiah’s mind. “And I know it isn’t one from my old pack. Those two things are certainties.”

“Okay. So…maybe it’s another coyote shifter on his own? Maybe you feel as though he’s calling to you because you know how it feels to be in his situation?”

“Maybe.” Foster didn’t look convinced. He sighed. “I shouldn’t have told you. You probably think I’m imagining things.”

“No. I believe it. I haven’t heard it myself, but River snores.”

“I do not.” River appeared in the doorway, David by his side.

“Yeah, you do,” David said. “I’ve slept in the same room as you, and it’s so loud, the only way I can sleep is with a pillow over my head.”

“You’re exaggerating.” River sat beside Josiah. The alpha smelled good. He always did. Josiah scooted closer to him, and River wrapped an arm around him.

“You get a letter from Mark?” River asked, spotting the paper on the table. There wasn’t anyone else who would be writing to Josiah.

“Yeah.” Seeing no use in putting off the inevitable, Josiah passed it to River. David sat in the big armchair, and Foster hung around, probably to see River’s reaction.

Presently, River grunted and handed the letter to David to read.

“You’re not mad?” Josiah watched his mate’s face.

“Oh, I’m mad, but what’s the point? I expected it.”

“I didn’t! The group didn’t give any indication they felt that way.”

“I’m sure it wasn’t everyone in the group,” David said, tossing the letter onto the table.

“Now I wish we hadn’t allowed them here,” Josiah said. He’d thought River would be more upset, and somehow the fact he wasn’t made Josiah angrier himself.

“You know we didn’t have any choice.” River said.

“The girls are ours. They don’t belong anywhere but with us.” Josiah moved out from under River’s arm and stood up, dropping his book to the floor.

“Of course they don’t,” River said.

“They don’t have any right to say otherwise.” Crossing his arms over his chest and tucking his hands underneath them, Josiah paced the room.

“No need to get upset,” River said, watching his mate. “They can’t do anything about it.”

Unease crawled all over Josiah. He knew River would protect them, but he couldn’t help but feel a threat to his family. He looked to David, who gave him a reassuring smile.

“Everything’s going to be fine.”
