Blurb: Halloran was meant to free them, but Asher has never known a harsher prison.

Hiring a band of outlaws to assassinate the mayor may be a bold move, but Asher Franklin can’t take another minute of bowing and scraping to the sadist who runs his hometown. Graveyards teem with the bodies of those who have tried and failed to rebel against the powers that be, but the legendary Red Horn Riders hold an invaluable advantage over their predecessors: They’re already dead.

Common wisdom would have it that vampires seldom keep faith with humans, though, and the Red Horn Riders are no exception. Halloran, the ruthless bandit at the helm of the gang and Sargasso’s prospective savior, would rather claim Asher for his own than grant him the fate he deserves. His unwelcome kindness is Asher’s worst nightmare. To be chattel is bad enough. To be the property of the one vampire whose duplicity just cost the lives of Asher’s friends is so much worse.

Yet in the ungoverned deserts of the Wild West, vampires are a law unto themselves and terror comes in many forms. Halloran’s bite may be sharp, but worse foes roam the sands than Asher can begin to imagine.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of dubious consent, and violence.

Review: Asher Franklin works for his Uncle Howard as a watchmaker’s clerk and courier, in the town of Sargasso. He’s fed up with Sargasso being run by vampire Mayor Ambrose Solomon and his sons, Malachi and Octavian, so he hired a gunslinger by the name of Halloran to take out Ambrose. But, it back fires on him. Along with his friends, Asher is now being made an example of in the town street. In order to save his friends, he admits to hiring the Red Horn Riders, and gets beaten severely by Octavian.

Halloran takes Asher off Ambrose’s hands, and takes him to Willowbranch where his gunslingers are holed up. As stubborn as Asher is, he’s ready to do anything to get out of Halloran’s clutches, but Asher finds himself the blood source for Halloran. After a month of dealing with the humiliation of being held captive by Halloran, Asher gets the chance to escape. Asher, his Uncle, and friends head for the town of Redemption where they think they could be safe. But once they meet vampire Moreau, Asher realizes they’re not safe at all. In fact, things in Redemption are frightening. And there’s one factor Asher has to face—he can’t escape from Halloran; there’s nothing he can do because Halloran is now in his blood.

Helena Maeve brings us an action packed, fast paced, thriller about cowboys and vampires in the old west. I liked these two MCs’ growing connection, with Asher’s stubbornness and Halloran the more strong and silent type. There’s also a good supporting cast of characters. I absolutely liked the creativeness in Asher and how his Uncle had saved him with metal pieces, and his automaton projects with human/mechanical parts. The concept that being bitten or drinking of a vampire does not turn humans was different from most vampire stories I’ve read. I really liked this combination of cowboys, vampires, and the old west.
