Forgiveness & Redemption
At the time I’m writing this I’ve been in the small town in Nevada I moved from three or so years ago for a couple weeks. There were several reasons why I made this trip but something unexpected happened—I found some redemption.
My daughter, her husband and my three wonderful, amazing grandkids live in Ely and visiting them was the biggest reason for this trip. But I have some friends here as well, including my ex-boyfriend. My ex and I had ended our relationship before I moved away but remained friends and we stayed so even after I moved to Oregon.
It’s an interesting thing being friends with a person you once loved and who broke your heart. I’d forgiven my ex for several things he did in our nearly eight year relationship but there were other things that I hadn’t quite managed to forgive him for. Things I didn’t think I’d ever be able to let go. I guess I liked carrying around lots of baggage.
For the first few days of my trip I only saw my ex once or twice and never for a long period of time. I wavered about spending much time with him because of the anger I had been hanging onto. The first weekend I was here I went on a camping trip with my daughter and her family. Yeah, camping with three kids ages seven, five and two! What was I thinking?
It ended being fun most of the time and because of the solitude (and lack of Internet access) I was able to do some heavy duty thinking. I’ve always had a thing for waterfalls and at the camping spot there was a small one that seemed to call to me.

I sat on the bridge that ran over the creek and just watched the water flow down the rocks for some time that first day. It was beautiful and calming and allowed me to let things go. Things I should’ve let go a long time ago such as things that had happened with my ex. I tossed rocks into the water and watched them float away pretending they were the baggage I’d been holding on to.
Something funny happened when I forgave him in my heart—I felt a sense of redemption. I’d redeemed parts of me I’d had blocked off. Sections of my heart and soul that had been dark were now mine to reclaim. Forgiving others isn’t just for the other person it’s about yourself. Not holding onto the negativity lifted a weight off of me and things that I was once unsure about are now clear.
In Confessions Rafe is a man who needs redemption because of the baggage he held onto. Thanks to stuff that happened in his younger years as well as an undercover assignment with the mob he has a lot of darkness in his soul. He’s been unable to deal with it thanks to PTSD and chose alcohol to dull his pain. When Rafe meets Leif Carson something changes for him. He sees a chance at a normal life but shit goes down before they can get too far in their relationship.
Just like me, Rafe has an epiphany, though his is far more dramatic than mine. Just like me, Rafe decides to focus on the future and not the past.
