Blurb: Artist Arik Bosler is terrified he might have lost his creative gift in the accident that left his hand badly burned. When he’s offered the chance to work with renowned artist Ken Brighton, Arik fears his injury will be too much to overcome.
He travels to Pleasanton to meet Ken, where he runs into the intimidating Reg Thompson. Reg, a biker who customizes motorcycles, is a big man with a heart of gold who was rejected by most of his family. Arik is initially afraid of Reg because of his size. However, it’s Reg’s heart that warms Arik’s interest and gets him to look past the exterior to let down his guard.
But Arik soon realizes that certain members of Reg’s motorcycle club are into things he can’t have any part of. Reg can’t understand why Arik disappears, until he learns Arik’s injury was the result of his father’s drug activity. Though neither Reg nor Arik wants anything to do with drugs, the new leadership of Reg’s club might have other ideas.

Review: Arik Bosler is a gifted artist. He had the whole world in his grasp and then, his dominant hand is damaged in a fire, the details of which are revealed over the course of the book. Renowned artist Ken Bright calls Arik and invites him to come to his home to study with and learn from Ken. Arik is unsure that his talent can return or that Ken will want to work with “damaged goods”.
After fits and starts, and after Arik meets the children of Ken and his partner, each of which have overcome obstacles both physical and emotional to make it in the world, Arik is determined to at least try to get his talent back. As that process begins, Arik meets gas station owner Reg Thompson, a mountain of man, who is a gruff, grumbly biker and who totally catches the attention of Arik. The feeling becomes mutual when Arik realizes Reg is an artist in his own right, who customizes and paints bikes for interesting and eccentric customers.
Both men have had hard past lives. Arik had parents who didn’t have time for Arik because of their own codependent relationship and addictions. As a result, Arik is alone in the world. Reg was rejected by his parents after they suffered a family tragedy. Fortunately, Reg had his uncles, a loving couple who showed Reg that love can be good, a family is possible, and joy is attainable if you work for it.
Can that work for Arik and Reg? It does begin to take root as Arik begins to regain his talent. But events conspire to pull the would-be couple apart. Only time and true love can fix the broken parts of them both. There is also a little girl in the town’s children’s home, who has a damaged hand as well, and helps Arik and Reg realize they can have it all—if they want it.
A brief word about this series. Characters are in this book that have appeared in previous books, but it is not essential that you have read them all to enjoy this book. There are very few straight people in this town, and the children in it have all experienced tragedies and emotional turmoil that reflect the adults around them. If situations that border on soap opera bother you, skip this series and this book. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy it.
Greg Tremblay as narrator and voice actor is hard to beat. No matter what type of book he reads, he gives 100% of his talents to it. He does not shy away from or rush the sex scenes, and he delivers true emotion where it is required by the story he’s telling. Hearing his voice is a comforting thing. You know you will be taken on a ride that you will not regret. It is hard to say enough nice things about how Tremblay approaches a story without gushing or going all fan boy. Please buy this audio and enjoy it, not just for the story but for the talent on display by the narrator. I have my misgivings about the story at points, but the narration makes it wonderful.
Have fun and enjoy the swerving, bumpy ride.
