Blurb: There comes a time when you just have to walk away.
Langham has had enough of murder and mayhem. For too many years he’s dealt with the horrors of his job and it’s taking a toll on him. Now he’s got Oliver and is more settled in his private life, he doesn’t need to be married to his job anymore.
Can he divorce himself from it, though? And what else would he do anyway? Like Oliver says, the job is Langham’s life. That’s no longer true—Oliver is his life these days, and Langham wants nothing more than to spend quality time with his lover.
However, crime doesn’t stop just because Langham wants it to, and when a mysterious caller seems intent on drawing Langham into his weird and wicked web, Langham can’t say no. But he can say this is the last case and that he’ll be leaving the Force when it’s all wrapped up.
The problem is, The Caller has so many women on his kill list that the case isn’t likely to end any time soon. And The Caller…is he taunting Langham or reaching out for help? As bodies mount up and the calls become more frequent, The Caller realizes he may well be playing a game he should never have started—and that Langham will stop at nothing to bring him to justice.
Reader Advisory: This book contains violence, murder, mutilation and scenes from the perspective of a serial killer, which some readers may find distressing. There are also references to past child abuse.
Review: Oliver Baker and Detective Langham have worked as a homicide team for years in London. Even though Oliver has a job at the newspaper, his “gift” is what has him working with Langham. Spirits seek Oliver out, some of them don’t even realize they’re dead. Oliver can’t conjure up the spirits, they choose to contact him whenever they want, and they give him clues to the next murdered victim.
Langham has been doing detective work for years; he’s tired and has had enough. He loves Oliver and needs serious time, without interruption, to spend with Oliver. Even vacations get them caught up in murders, and they’ve both have come to close to death. One thing Langham refuses to lose is Oliver—it’s time to walk away.
This latest crazed killer is a character named “The Caller”. he calls and body count keep climbing, and it’s pushing Langham over the edge—The Caller always seems to be one step ahead of Langham. When he brings Oliver into this diabolical case, Langham realizes he can take no more.
The Voices series by Sarah Masters is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve followed it from the very first book, Needing. She’s created some of the most horrific and deranged murderers and gory murder plots, and Leaving ranks as one of the best. Most of all, she created two amazing characters, Oliver and Langham, and she’s shared their lives and let us watch them grow as a fun, loving, and dynamic couple.
There are eight books in the Voices series: Needing, Wanting, Keeping, Aching, Faking, Hiding, Taking and Leaving is the last. One day I will probably take time to read every one of these great stories again. I loved this series and will seriously miss Oliver and Langham. Well and truly done!
