“Don’t try to move. Just be still.” Iain recognized that voice. That was the voice of his hero.

Iain would have smiled, but it got lost somewhere in the haze of pain.

“Come here.” His voice was gravelly as if he swallowed rocks.

Iain turned his head, following the sound. Iain must have been asleep longer than he thought, if the darkness just beyond the curtained window was any indication. His Farm Boy was at the far end, leaning against the wall. A man Iain didn’t recognize sat in one of the chairs beside him, his eyes closed and a much smaller man draped across his lap, equally asleep.

Iain must have stared a little too long, because his hero said, “Night watch. We’re doing a stellar job, ain’t we?”

Finally, Iain found his smile. It touched the corners of his mouth and nothing else. Still, it was enough. “Who are they?”

“The big dude who’s supposed to be protecting you and failing at his job is Shade.”

Shade lifted his hand, his middle finger in the air.

“The other one is Finn. And Tanner should be back in a few minutes. He’s getting coffee. I’m Ash.”

“Iain.”

Ash smiled. “I know your name.”

“I suppose you would.” Iain looked at the chair beside his bed, the one his brother had been in that first time he woke up. Apparently, Ash got the point, because he walked across the room. “You need the nurse or something?”

Iain shook his head. “Just talk to me. Keep my mind off the pain.”

Ash sat down and looked at him for a long time before he spoke. “Raven texted me earlier, told me you asked for me.”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. Because you’re the only person, I know for a fact won’t hurt me. Besides my brother. That hardly makes sense, but I feel like shit, and I get weird when I’m sick. So, yeah.”
