Review: Zombies, werewolves and romance—OH MY! I love, love, love the first book in the series, Kick at the Darkness. I fell in love with Adam and Parker one action packed moment to the next. Fight the Tide picks up right where the first book ends, as Adam and Parker navigate the new world they find themselves in, struggling to find a place for themselves and deal with the emotional turmoil brought on in the first book. I do not recommend jumping into the storyline with this book, it is an extension of the first and truly, Kick at the Darkness should be read first.
Sometimes in certain series I find that the additional books tend to have the same overall theme and follow the same plot, with a few different locations and characters creating the drama. What I enjoyed about this second book is that it wasn’t the same as the first book; it was an extension of the journey of Adam and Parker. While the first book centered around the action, fear and struggle to understand and deal with the creepers that have taken over and wreaked havoc on humanity, while starting to like and then even love one another, the second book is more focused on the emotional aftermath once Adam and Parker have accepted the world as it is now that it has forever changed. They have already established themselves as a couple and as they set sail, since creepers don’t appear to be able to swim, the action calms enough for them to start to mentally process everything they went through in the first book. And boy, is there a lot to process. All the while they have to periodically get supplies, which means confronting the zombie-like humans who have essentially taken over, though their threat is not constantly at the forefront. Being on the sea also has a different danger than the creepers Adam and Parker face. Pirates.
Make no mistake, this story is no less intense, the focus is just more on the internal struggles they both face rather than constantly being in motion and running for their lives. Adam longs for a family and a safe place, hoping to convince Parker to check out Salvation Island. Parker is fearful and distrusts anyone but Adam, creating friction as they try to figure out what they are going to do. As they deal with their emotions, both the characters’ thoughts, fears and insecurities change from what we saw in the first book, and some situations that occur in this book, as well. I appreciated this as there is no way they both wouldn’t have been changed from what they had dealt with and seen in Kick at the Darkness, making everything more realistic.
I tend not to go into details about books in my reviews, fearful that I will be giving too much of the story away, and instead, giving my impressions. So I am not going to go into detail about the overall plot or other characters. I will say the introduction of several other characters was necessary to the progression of the series and the direction it is going in, and some of them broke my heart while others brought a smile to my face, and yes—some just pissed me off.
I was completely engrossed in this story and the author once again has done a wonderful job; the pacing was slow and steady rather than like the first book, which was constant action. The sex scenes were hot and the chemistry between Adam and Parker continued to be off the charts. I am going to put a disclaimer on the sex scenes; there is a fisting scene. It didn’t bother me in any way, and it was more about the couple’s emotional needs than a scene just thrown in for the heck of it. I felt that particular scene was overall done very well, with the focus not just on what was happening but the reasons and feelings involved… but, it may make some readers squeamish, so be aware.
If you love zombies, werewolves, pirates and romance, I highly recommend this series! I personally can’t wait to see what is in store for Adam and Parker next.
