Blurb: Devon fled Wyoming as soon as he turned eighteen, leaving behind his high school love, Levi. After six years in the big city, Devon returns to his hometown. Not much has changed, except that Levi is no longer in the closet. He’s also single and living his dream—managing the local wild horse population. Both of them are very interested in picking up where they left off, but Devon is no more ready to reveal his orientation than he was as a teenager.

No one is going to shove Levi back in the closet—not even Devon. For a relationship to work, they’ll have to put the past behind them and find the courage to face the future as who they really are—a couple in love. But Devon doesn’t know if he’s strong enough. Maybe Levi would be better off without him—and his hang-ups.

Review: During their senior year in high school, Levi and Devon had a special relationship, but Devon left his small hometown in Wyoming right after high school, thinking life would be better for him in a big city. He left in anger, without giving Levi a chance to explain why he wouldn’t go with him. But after six years, he’s realized he’s still a country boy, so Devon returns to Rock Springs to find that life there is pretty much the same—including a few of his high school friends who still haven’t grown up, and that he doesn’t really relate to them anymore.

Even though Levi stayed behind, he went to Laramie for three years and attended college. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in rangeland management and is working as a specialist in the field, though his accomplishments didn’t come easy—he had to face sadness and heartache along the way. He loves what he does, but he loves horses more.

When Levi and Devon see each other again, it’s clear they want to try and get back what they had, even if it’s only friendship. They both start spending quality time with each other, but not so much in public. Devon can’t seem to overcome his fear of coming out, and it leads to a misunderstanding with Levi once again. Levi is an easy going guy, but he’s already dealt with the intolerance of coming out, and is never going back into the closet.

Wide Open Spaces is my first Renee Stevens book. It’s a well written and emotional story about a second chance at love, and the struggle of being who you are. I thought both Levi and Devon had great chemistry, and in their own way supported one another. I enjoyed this novel and will be keeping watch for other books by this author.
