Blurb: Thrown together on the road between Laramie and Cheyenne, cowboy Johnny Anglim is smitten with the powerfully masculine Laz Kincaid, who’s grieving for the horse he’s had to shoot. Doubling up, the two reach a town where passion ignites, yet Laz, despite the intimacy, remains distant. Eventually the pair reach Cheyenne where Deputy Wade Rowley warns Johnny off Laz, declaring only he can reach the walled-off Civil War veteran. Johnny realizes he’s caught in a triangle that may prove dangerous, yet he refuses to let Laz go, bringing on further grief.
Review: Dale Chase is the best author of gritty, erotic westerns set in the 1800s, and Coming to Grief is by no means a sweet and fuzzy love story. It turns out to be a dangerous love triangle, and nothing good can come of that!
Johnny Anglim travels from place to place herding cattle. When there’s a break he finds himself helping the aloof Laz Kincaid, and even though he can’t keep his mind off Kincaid, Johnny doesn’t lack in sexual escapades.
Sheriff Wade Rowley is a man who has a connection to Laz, and he isn’t about to give that up. Needless to say, the sheriff has warned Johnny to stay away from the man.
In a way, Coming to Grief is a little bit of a mystery. Wade and Johnny both have an interest in Kincaid—but Wade doesn’t want to see Laz with anyone else. Johnny is willing to walk away only if Kincaid has no interest in him.
In the style of Dale Chase’s short stories, there’s no in-depth character information, but the storyline and the brief but solid characterization still grabbed me, and I needed to find out where these characters would wind up.
If you’re looking for something a little different, give Dale Chase a try and have a fun read.
