At first Fisher doesn’t know what to make of JD, but he slowly comes out of his shell. And when Fisher’s job is threatened because of a fire, JD’s support and care is more than Fisher ever thought he could expect. But when people from Fisher’s past turn up in town at the center of a resurgent drug epidemic, Fisher knows they could very well sabotage his budding relationship with JD.
Review: Andrew Grey brings us back to Carlisle, PA, with Fire and Snow, a big-small city somewhere in Pennsylvania, populated by earnest policemen and their life partners. This is book four in the series, and some characters make appearances in this book that have been featured in past stories in this series, but enough of their history is given so that this book is pretty much a standalone. This is an expansion of the series, not a continuation of a previous story.
Fisher is a man alone. He has a past and has had a traumatic head injury that has left him both convinced he will remain alone and afraid of the manic mood swings and panic attacks that have plagued him since his injury. JD is a police officer now, living and working in Carlisle after an incident in his own past has taken him from his Southern hometown to be a cop up north.
They meet each other by chance in a park on a chilly afternoon after JD makes a drug bust. Gradually, Fisher’s health problems and past come out, as does the secret of JD’s past, as well as a visit from JD’s money obsessed mother.
JD and Fisher become enmeshed in the machinations of a drug ring that threatens the town, their lives, and their burgeoning relationship. How they get out of that situation has everything to do with their growing closeness. We get visits from some other of Carlisle’s inhabitants that you meet earlier in the series. It is nice to check in with them and to see how they all link together. But we do get the impression that all of these men and the family they created is fully functional and close knit.
As the narrator for the entire series so far, Randy Fuller is also like an old friend on these books. His voice is fully capable of giving us distinct speaking voices for his characters. It is always nice to get a book where the vocal talent is equal to or better than the story its telling. This narration really gives depth to the characters and to the story. It keeps you involved and never flags from top quality. Whether the voice is that of a child or an elderly lady, each one is given a complete characterization. Even if they only spend a paragraph or two in the story.
Buy the book if you enjoy stories of police and romance. Buy the book if you love Andrew Grey and the worlds he creates. If you’ve never read a book by him, this one would not be a bad place to start. Buy this audio if you want a complete story told to you.
Randy Fuller is one of the better voice artists out there—buy the audio and you will not feel your money has been wasted. I really enjoyed Fire and Snow, and I think most listeners will as well. With so many choices in audiobooks these days, it is also very nice that Fuller does not shy away from the M/M romance aspect of the book. The love scenes are not rushed and are given his full talents. Pick up a copy for yourself and enjoy.
