Blurb: Sumak finally convinces his gargoyle clutch’s leaders that he can do more than cook food, prepare picnics, and wash dishes. He revels in his new, part-time job of walking their territory’s boundaries. Enjoying the moonlight, Sumak goes farther than he should and stumbles across a young human out jogging. He immediately recognizes the male’s scent as his mate and follows him to a parking area. Taking note of the license plate on the human’s truck, he discovers the man’s name is Andre Capston. His joy at learning that his mate is the brother of Mace Capston—a fellow gargoyle’s mate—is short-lived. Sumak finds out that Mace’s family disowned him years ago for being gay. Sumak struggles with how to pursue his young mate, but Fate steps in, giving him an opportunity. Can Sumak convince his mate that true family loves and supports each other no matter what their differences?
Review: Sumak is one of the younger gargoyles in his clutch and as such, he’s pretty much been relegated to kitchen duty. But he really, really wants to help more and so he finally gets his chance to help with perimeter and grounds patrol. Of course, his first night out he goes a bit far afield, and when he discovers his mate on the trails of the local forest, he’s thrilled. Andre, his mate, has a dead battery and so Sumak calls for help.
Andre is a football player at the local college, and also the brother of Mace, one of the other human mates at the estate. Mace had been cut off and abused by his family once they discovered he was gay. He hasn’t seen Andre in several years. When he finds out that his brother is Sumak’s mate, he knows it’ll be an uphill battle and he’s worried for both himself and his brother.
Andre’s football friends have heard rumors about the estate and they decide to try to sneak in and see what’s really going on. Of course, they get caught, but not before they see a whole lot of shifters, gargoyles and mates and hatchlings (include Tible and Gus and little Vaclar) enjoying a midnight picnic party. While Andre faints, his teammates are taken in to learn the truth about paranormals and make sure they won’t divulge their secrets.
When Andre comes to, he’s not sure what to make of Sumak, who possibly is a little bit nervous about sharing everything about paranormals with Andre. But certainly Andre is intrigued. And attracted. He’s not ever been with a guy before, but he’s never been that excited about being with a girl either, so maybe this will be good.
As Andre and Sumak get to know each other, Andre becomes more comfortable with the paranormals and he’s really impressed with the way they support each other. Plus, the sex ain’t bad either. ;-) He also is very happy to see his brother again. He’s glad that Mace is happy, and he knows there will be hell to pay if and when his parents discover that Andre is seeing someone—someone male. So of course that has to happen, and Andre cuts ties with his family. When his family doesn’t want to take no for an answer, the clutch has to get involved. In the end, though, Andre and Sumak know that everything will be alright and they are happy living their lives as mates.
Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Andre and Sumak are so cute; they are both pretty young and kind of naïve. We get to see a lot of the rest of the gargoyles in this one, and since Sumak and Tible are BFFs, we get a glimpse of Tible’s life with Gus and, most importantly, Vaclar! We haven’t seen the hatchling in forever, and I cannot to see him again! I want to know everything about him! Come on Charlie Richards, let us see more of these hatchlings.
