But life in the 77th Precinct doesn’t leave much room for internal reflection. A confrontation with a stick-throwing tumbleweed in Fairmount Park leads to bizarre consequences involving pill bugs, statues and…time travel? If Vikash manages to survive the week and stay in one point in time, he might be able to address normal things like relationship problems. He just needs Kyle to have a little more patience. Maybe a few centuries’ worth.
Review: I had such fun reading the first book in this series, Lime Gelatin and Other Monsters, I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to dive back into the lives of officers at the 77th Precinct and see more of Vikash and Kyle… and, if I am truly honest, Leather Jacket (how I fell in love with an animated jacket I have no clue, but Angel Martinez made it happen in book one, and that’s what I would call talent).
I really delighted in consuming the newest addition to the series as Vikash and Kyle both deal with their relationship obstacles, all the while trying to track down a pill bug that induces time travel on the recipient of its bite.
This series so far has proven to be quirky and fun. Although this particular book is told from Vikash’s POV, and his personality is of a more serious nature. His thoughts are more troubled and his fears much more prominent than Kyle’s were in the first book. Vikash is the yin to Kyle’s yang, as far as personalities, and I was quite engrossed in getting to know what was beyond his cold façade portrayed in the first book.
Despite Vikash’s POV being of a more serious nature in his thoughts, the book itself does not lose its eccentricity and is just as entertaining. We get more of Leather Jacket (LJ), a new fuzzy mascot named Tim (yes, I fell in love with Tim too), and get to experience all the other officers with their oddities; all the while, random craziness ensues as they chase down the pill bug responsible for random time travel while being bitten and… you guess it… time travelling.
Not only did Ms. Martinez do a phenomenal job with the present day in this book, but I quite enjoyed the additional world building from both future and past that Vikash himself reveals during the course of this investigation. The future world and its changes was extremely intriguing and unique in its portrayal. I found myself wanting more of the future world.
I am officially hooked on this series and the quirky and creative world that Angel Martinez has built. This book was just plain fun, and I can’t wait to see what the next installment has in store for the readers.
If you are a reader looking for a book that is quick, light, and bizarre, and that leaves you with a smile on your face, this book—and this series—is highly recommended.
