Blurbs: BOOK ONE: THE PINKERTON MAN
Stiles Langberry leaves England under the dark cloud of blackmail.
He resettles in America with a new name, becoming a Pinkerton Agent.
His new employer sends him undercover to a brothel that serves homosexual men, where prostitutes are being murdered. In the course of his investigation, he becomes involved with Paul, one of the prostitutes. Complicating matters, one of the suspects draws Stiles like no man before him. Stiles knows he must stop the killer before he strikes again.
BOOK TWO: HOME ON THE RANGE
Pinkerton Agent Stiles Long is sent to the Circle W Ranch to uncover who is killing the ranch’s cattle. In order to discover the truth about the goings on at the ranch, Stiles has to prove to the ranchers he’s more than a good-looking city slicker.
Savage Beare, the head ranch foreman, is far from happy that Stiles is there to check things out. He has secrets of his own.
Stiles finds Savage incredibly good-looking, but cold and aloof.
He’s also a suspect. One of many.
When Stiles’ best friend and partner, Lizzie Ferguson, is kidnapped things begin to shake apart.
Stiles doesn’t trust anyone and he needs to find Lizzie before it’s too late.
Review: In The Pinkerton Man, Stiles Langberry is a constable with the Scotland Yard. He finds himself in a precarious position when someone tries to blackmail him. It seems like the blackmailer is trying to get money from Stiles, even though his lover is now dead. It’s lucky for Stiles that when his sergeant finds out about the situation, he gives Stiles some sound advice—Stiles is now on a voyage to America where he meets a young lady by the name of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Ferguson, and they become good friends.
Stiles has now changed his last name to Long, and he’s applied to the Pinkerton Agency in St. Louis. His first case is a possible serial murderer and will introduce him to a young man by the name of Paul.
In Home on the Range, Lizzie gets to join Stiles on his next case to Mercer, Wyoming, to the Circle W ranch. Someone has been poisoning cattle on the ranch, and Stiles is there to solve the crime. He comes across Savage Beare, the big ranch foreman, and there’s something about this man that has Stiles attracted to him.
In the first story, The Pinkerton Man, I started out liking Stiles, then I had some doubts about him, but as he faces another tragedy, you can feel his emotions, and his loneliness starts to come through. I found Lizzie to be an interesting character also. Not only is she a great friend to Stiles, but she’s a good detective. Both of them learn that people wear masks and have something to hide. There’s definitely more to come as they both come across a newspaper article about a murder at a boarding school.
So far, the Pinkerton Man series is entertaining, well written and easy to follow as C.J. Baty takes us back to the old west, to the year 1895. Both storylines are suspenseful, action packed and the characters are great. This series has a lot of potential, and I can only see it getting better. I am so looking forward to the next mystery in this series by C.J. Baty.
