Blurb: Alex was a good cop in the wrong place. The old south was a place that still did not have the tolerance for those who had a taste for loving the same sex, no matter how good they were at their job.
After getting a commendation, his boss arranged for Alex to transfer to a location that should be more tolerant to the handsome young man’s preferences in his sex life. What he also found in the small city south of Chicago was a serial killer, no help from the locals, and a partner that could scare the hell out of every gang-banger on any street corner.
A broad shouldered, dark cop with a scar on his cheek, the partner was good at looking for answers that the officials just didn’t care if they got solved. Still, Alex was on the job and into the partner.
Review: Alex Char has always wanted to be in law enforcement and follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps—he worked hard to become a patrolman with the Georgia State Troopers. Alex is really a sweetheart, a leather clad, motorcycle riding, detective eager to learn and do a good job. When he witnesses a compromising situation, he gets a promotion along with a transfer to the Chicago PD. He has his work cut out for him, though, when he’s partnered with Reid.
Reid is a seasoned detective on the Chicago PD who transferred from the SFPD for reasons of his own. We don’t find out his first name for a while, and we don’t really get to know his personal life, though every so often there are hints dropped that there is more to the man. What we do get to find out is that he doesn’t want or need a partner, especially one that could cause a distraction. Every once in a while, Reid tries to give Alex the slip, but Alex is right on Reid’s tail. Reid’s working on the case of a lifetime, the Shoelace serial murders. I thought Reid would resist Alex being his partner a little more, but when Alex starts getting absorbed in the case, Reid realizes how smart he is. Alex wants to learn everything he can from this seasoned detective.
Alex and Reid are not only up against a meticulous killer and an increasing body count; they also face the problems of a small police force in a slum area, no budget to increase the force, a captain that doesn’t want a serial killer revealed to the public, and intolerance amongst their fellow officers.
H. Beryl has created an excellent murder mystery with suspense and danger. Not only is the plot expertly laid out but she takes us through the progression of solving a serial murder. Although we learn more about Alex, we never lose sight of Reid. Emergence Is the Process turned out to be a teaser and a page turner for me. I’ve been searching for a new detective team with crazy murders to solve, and H. Beryl has caught my interest. This has every potential for being a really good mystery/suspense series, and now I’m so ready for the next crime that Reid and Alex team up to solve.
