At a Glance: I enjoyed a lot of the elements of this story, but felt like the ending was a little bit abrupt and rushed.

Blurb: When they first meet in the woods and Brad takes in Davie’s small stature and pretty-boy looks, he assumes the kid is just another runaway. As a cop, Brad has learned to recognize the signs. But Brad is already in trouble with his superiors, getting suspended for “assuming” something on another case, so now he knows better than to assume anything.
Davie, actually in his early twenties and far from being a child, escaped a horrible past and now lives each day living from hand to mouth as a drifter. Homeless and starving, he meets Brad in the woods, and despite their differences, can’t fight the immediate attraction he shares with the older man.
But with both men still trying to deal with their troubled pasts, they quickly realize it’s just not the right time to begin a long-term relationship. When they meet a year later, however, and they feel the same attraction to each other, will they be able to follow their hearts without their pasts coming back to haunt them?
Review: Brad is a cop who has made a mistake—didn’t keep his eye on the ball due to a personal situation that distracted him to the point of cloudy thinking. He’s camping while he awaits his fate. Davie is a young guy who is currently homeless, through no fault of his own. To say that he’s not had an easy life is a real understatement!
Davie figures out that Brad is a cop pretty quickly. Brad figures Davie is a runaway when he approaches Brad’s fire in the woods. Davie is underweight and looks younger than his age. Brad is wary, and Davie is proud, and they are both a little prickly with each other. But Brad is also lonely and Davie is hungry, so they share Brad’s food and fire and some painful pasts.
Davie is hoping to get a job at the orchard down the road, but when nothing’s available, Brad suggests another possibility—but it means going into to town and trusting someone. Davie isn’t big on trust, for good reason. He’s been lied to and screwed over pretty much his whole life, by his family and then by others. Brad does his best to convince Davie that the offer is on the up and up.
Brad is lucky and gets to keep his job with a new assignment. Surprisingly, he enjoys it. He runs into Davie, but for some reason he feels like maybe he should give him some space, even though he said he’ll call. Davie feels rejected, especially since he has seen Brad out and makes assumptions. It takes a while for both guys to find a way to communicate with each other and stop assuming and thinking they know what’s going on.
I enjoyed a lot of the elements of this story, but felt like the ending was a little bit abrupt and rushed. Maybe another ten pages of our MCs interacting with each other would have resulted in a smoother closing. I’d love to know what happens next, and also what’s in store for Brad’s work partner. He deserves his own story too. :)
