Blurb: Jake Rushman is on the run, but it’s too late. He’s being tracked by an expert.

Motorcycle Club Enforcer Nick is tough, but even he has a conscience. It’s slowly destroying him, together with memories of his parents’ ugly deaths. Nick eliminates the guilty, but Jake Rushman is the innocent witness to a murder. It will be one kill too many.

Determined to find redemption, Nick plans to trade his life for Jake’s. Neither man counts on the fierce, powerful bond that the collision of their opposing worlds brings, and Jake refuses to let Nick sacrifice himself. He offers Nick the one thing he’s never had: hope.

But with a violent past tracking them, Nick might be forced to do the one thing he promised himself he never would—kill again.

Review: At the young age of nine, in order to survive, Nick had to play along with his uncle and join a fierce motorcycle gang. He grew up to be the enforcer for his uncle. Three days before his twenty-third birthday, he finds himself tracking down a witness to a murder—and finds himself obsessed with Jake Rushmore.

Jake Rushmore is on the run after witnessing the murder. He knows he’s being followed, and is resigned to facing the outcome once caught. But as scared as he is, he makes a move on Nick that changes both their lives.

The last stop for Nick is Sydney, where he plans to put the cat-and-mouse chase to an end. But then Jake makes a surprising move, one that Nick can’t resist.

Just when Nick thinks his life has changed for the better, evil rears its ugly head. But Jake is smart, he’s always one step ahead and holds all the cards, and he’s going to do more than control a dangerous situation.

Happy Birthday is a first time read for me from B.D. Roca. For a short novella, this was definitely suspenseful, fast paced and powerful. I liked the connection between Jake and Nick. Even though the story is short, I think there was just enough development with Jake and Nick to make them click. For me, Jake stole the show with his smart thinking and courage.
