Review: Inspector Christopher Locke has got a bad reputation because of his feelings for another man, so he’s been transferred to Waterford, and the rumors are flying. Locke is feeling the fallout and just doesn’t know if he will ever find a place in any patrol, but Chief Wilson wants Locke around because he has some old-school fighting talents that the chief wants the Waterford patrol to learn.
Jonathan Blade is a spoiled brat, and thinks Locke is just a disgrace. He also doesn’t like the fact that Locke could be a threat to him losing his position in the rankings. Bratty Blade is also keeping a couple of secrets.
Locke and Blade wind up being patrol partners, investigating the murder of a patrol member. Locke’s sleuthing skills lead him to fairytales, and he concludes that the culprit is an evil vampyre. Blade thinks that’s just ridiculous and goes back to the scene of the crime where danger lurks and Blade finds himself in trouble.
Besides the majik and the horrific vampyres, there are elves. The elves or addlers, Zephyr and Badger, are like manservants designated to certain members of the patrol. The addlers see and know everything about their designated patrol member. Badger services both Locke and Blade, so he’s a bit of an instigator and gets Chief Inspector Wilson involved in a scheme that includes Locke and Blade.
I’m usually not into stories with “majik” and elves, but I have to say Locke & Blade was different, fun and entertaining for me. It’s been awhile since I’ve read Lynn Lorenz—this book is very entertaining. I thought the story was unique, a quick and easy read with danger, humor and some good characters. I’m anxious for more adventures with Locke and Blade. Not only do they have to figure out the vampyres, but there’s also a crime syndicate in the midst of all the other problems.
