Review: This book was a flat out five star read for me! I am a huge fan of Sue Brown and her writing style, and while this is not her usual romance, in that it is a mystery/whodunit, the book does have an underlying theme of pure romantic attraction between the two main characters. The banter is light and witty and the chemistry of the two MCs comes off the page. This book paces well, and every time you think you may have it figured out, Brown throws in a curve ball and the mystery continues. I pretty much read this book straight through, and it has been a LONG time since I have done that. Josh works for CDR, a security firm that provides protection for those who can afford it. He heads a team of three: himself and a pair of twins, Gil and Landry. Josh loves his job at CDR; he is good at it. He’s not the muscle, that is the twins’ job, but Josh’s quick mind and eidetic memory make him perfect for solving puzzles and figuring out who may be after the people they protect. He’s brilliant, he’s a little irreverent, outspoken, and gorgeous. Josh and his team get sent to London to find a hedge fund investor who has gone missing, but things just don’t add up, and it soon becomes clear that everyone involved has their own agenda for what is happening. And no one wants to share.
Cal has been working for a sister agency to CDR for several years, he’s good at his job, and having to work with the new guys from across the pond puts him in a position to test whether their reputation is as deserved as people say it is. From the get-go Cal butts heads with Josh in an unspoken test to see if Josh measures up. Cal is older, a little battle worn but has a heart of gold and amazingly sharp green eyes.
First of all, there is the romance…
“Morning Angel” pops up on Josh Coopers computer every morning. It has for two years. The first time it appears, he answers with “Morning Charlie,” in a nod to the old television show. Now, two years later, Josh is in love with a man he has never met but who he talks to every day. Charlie seems to know so much about his life that Josh is convinced it is someone he knows. Then Josh gets sent on assignment to London and the prompts begin to change, to “Morning My Angel,” and Josh begins to wonder if he has met “Charlie” and who he could be. But then Josh meets Cal in London, a real, live, breathing man, and the attraction is immediate. Torn between a “real” man and Charlie, Josh has to choose.
Then there are the mysteries…
A missing hedge fund manager, stolen millions, dead bodies, crying widows, secretive agencies each working their own angle on the case, surly cops, overlapping evidence and more questions than answers. For her first mystery, Sue Brown manages to create a complex and multi-faceted whodunit that will keep you guessing and totally entertained from beginning to end. I appreciated the ending in the book; after all, these are two very intelligent men and as such, having them maintain their own identities as they work toward their HEA made perfect sense to me. I felt it was a testament to the depth of the characters and Sue Brown’s writing style that the men she created stayed true to form right to the last page.
