At a Glance: I don’t read many vampire stories unless they pique my interest, but J.P. Bowie has brought me back into the fold with this smartly written story.

Review: Rafael Barrantes is over eight-hundred years old. He was once a lord in Catalonia, but as time went on, he made his way to the US and is now one of the most powerful vampires residing in Los Angeles, and a member of the Vampire Council that administers the laws and everyday business for vampire enterprises.

The war has ended and Cole Everett, ex-GI, is back in the states. He seeks out his cousin Sean Martin, whom he hasn’t seen in years and wants to reconnect with. Cole didn’t come back from the war without issues; he has PTSD—nightmares, the shakes, and losing someone he loved consumes Cole.

Things get a little weird for Cole when Sean tells him he’s mated to Arturo, a vampire. Cole gives the whole vampire situation some thought, and deals with it well. Plus, he doesn’t want to lose the connection with Sean again. Then, when Cole meets Rafael, his whole life is turned upside down.

When Petr Volstoy, Russia’s premier, is kidnapped (along with schematics for S490), and Cole’s life is in danger, Rafael and the guys come together with a plan to rescue them.

I don’t read many vampire stories unless they pique my interest, but J.P. Bowie has brought me back into the fold with this smartly written story. The Vampire and the G.I. is set in the year 2034, when vampires are “coming out,” so to speak, even though they have secretly aided the US for a while. The storyline is easy to follow and the plot has danger, suspense, treason, humor and love.

So, if you have an itch for something exciting in vampire fiction, give J.P. Bowie a try. He started this series in 2008 with My Vampire and I, which is where we first learn of Marcus Lucius Verano, who’s mentioned throughout this series.
