Blurb: As a teenager, Archie Noblesse clawed his way out of the poverty, heartache, and abuse of the reservation and left his family behind. Desperate to shake the shadow of his past, he reinvents himself as Archer Noble, an outspoken blogger and controversial author who lives only for himself. But when his beloved sister dies, Archer is saddled with guardianship of his niece and nephew.

Elementary school teacher Ryan Eriksson is devastated when his best friend Marguerite is killed, leaving her two young children orphaned. Helping Archer with his new responsibilities eases his grief, but when Archer offers him custody of the children, Ryan’s left with an impossible choice: get the family he’s always wanted, or respect Margie’s wishes and convince Archer to give parenting—and his heritage—a chance.

To buy time, Ryan promises to stay for the summer, hoping that Archer will change his mind and fall for the kids. But Archer’s reluctant, and the growing attraction between him and Ryan complicates matters. Legal decisions must be made, and soon, before Ryan returns to school. But with hearts involved, more than just the children’s future is on the line.

Review: Have you ever come across a book you almost passed up because you just went, “Oh, another one involving kids, blah, blah, blah,” but then you got it anyway just for the fact that you’ve liked a couple of previous books by the author? And then, when you finally found the time to sit down to read it, you didn’t expect much from it except a few hours of what I liked to call a lazy, relaxing reading evening. Well, what happened after I finished reading Until September was a dire need to grab someone’s arm and drag them to sit down and demand that they just read this book!

Until September is very well written, and captivated me from the first page, onward, beginning with life on a reservation for a young boy without parents. Archie comes off as a bit of a jerk as an adult, but this man never had any real stability growing up. Not to mention what that creepy uncle of his did to him.

I was also drawn to learning more about how Archie and Ryan could possibly develop a relationship, especially with the children who had just lost their mother, and how they would fit and make this family work. There wasn’t a bunch of unnecessary drama in this story, and the plot didn’t drag on or end with a bunch of unanswered questions. This is the kind of book I want to read when I’m missing someone, or life is so chaotic that I need something to ground me and remind me of what’s important in life. I actually had a moment or two where I was crying with Archie when the loss of his sister finally hit him!

Michael Pauley may be a new-to-me narrator, but his performance of a story that I absolutely adore made me the happiest person in the world when it came to bringing Archie and Ryan to life. And, I’m more than willing to listen to him again in any other stories he narrates. He has a great voice! I own the ebook, paperback and now the audio of Until September. My collection is complete! This story just hits all my 5 star buttons, and has earned its place on my favorite reread shelf.
