Hello! Thank you so much for welcoming me to your blog today to mark the release of my most current novel, In A Gilded Cage, published by Evernight Publishing on October 21, 2016. In A Gilded Cage is my first FAIRY TALE RETELLING. It’s a dark and sexy M/M retelling of the story Rapunzel, as told by The Brothers Grimm.

Highs and Lows: A Journey of a Guest-Post-Writing Author

(I use a lot of parentheses in this one.)

I burned out.

I wrote too many guest posts and it cooked my creativity.

Here’s how it happened…

For my last release, The Art of Hero Worship, I estimate that I wrote far more than fifty guest posts, including interviews, and excluding excerpts. Over the course of this guest-post-writing journey, I cast my characters with sexy actors, I chose songs that reminded me of various parts of the story and created a playlist (or five), I discussed my four children and my husband in more detail than they’re aware of (please don’t tell them), as well as copping to my love of coffee and my addiction to chocolate. I confessed to the identities of my favorite authors. And more. So much more.

By the end of this undertaking, I was scraping the dusty back corners of my mind for possible ideas for guest posts. And one day, during a trip to New York City to visit my daughter—where I sat on the bed in the hotel for days on end without ever leaving once, writing guest post upon guest post—I came to the end of my (seemingly never-ending-guest-post-writing) rope… and even then I went on to fulfill every last request I’d agreed to. (Yes, I know, I am a woman of honor.)

My assistants were awesome—they found even more book blogs for me to visit. But I told them (screamed like a crazy person), “I CAN DO NO MORE!!” because, like I said, I was done. “Mia Kerick’s ability to write guest posts is toast,” as some of my YA characters would say. I had come to the end of my fairly long guest-blog-writing rope and my brain needed rest.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz……

BUT… during my brain nap I reaped the rewards of my many visits to wonderful, welcoming book blogger’s and reviewers sites. The Art of Hero Worship sold well, and I am thankful for the opportunity to publicize it.  THANK YOU, everybody for hosting me!!

Zzzzzzzzzzzz…….

And I stayed in creativity recovery mode…. I didn’t write anything for a while.

But after a month or two, the writing bug bit me again. I started getting ideas. Not blog post ideas, but book ideas. I wanted to write about trans* people, their struggles with life and romance, for both YA and adult audiences. I wanted to create a modern LGBTQ fairy tale retelling, and I wanted to write more YA polyamory stories.

And when a publisher accepted the first manuscript I submitted, as Evernight Publishing accepted In A Gilded Cage for their “Naughty Fairy Tales” line, I wanted to talk about my motivation to write this story. I wanted to tell readers that fairy tales have always fascinated me, and how I wanted to create a very dark one of my own, with LGBTQ character, that drew parallels to the original stories….

And, I knew I was back. This is my very first guest post I have written since I let go of the rope back in January.  I hope you like it. (And I have MANY more ideas.)

About the Book

in-a-guilded-cage-evernightpublishing-2016-ver2Lucci Grimley is indeed alluring—crowned with a mane of long blond hair, and blessed with an enchanting musical talent that draws a brave rescuer to a high tower hidden in the forest.

However, this modern-day Rapunzel is a young man, sold as a child to the wealthy and childless Damien Gotham for the price of a fast car and a pile of cash. And Lucci’s heroic prince is William “Prin” Prinzing, a handsome college student and star soccer player, hired to care for the grounds of the lavish Tower Estate. Prin climbs an extension ladder rather than a long golden braid to gain access to Lucci’s second floor bedroom window, ultimately penetrating the secrecy surrounding the cloistered young man.

Friendship, and soon romance, blooms. The tower captive eagerly gives his loving innocence to his brave rescuer, which sends the strict and reclusive Gotham into a frenzy of jealous rage. With Prin, Lucci gets a taste of real life, and he wants more. Together, the young men must face Gotham’s ruthlessness and pay the price of liberating Lucci.

About the Author

Mia KerickMia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—one in law school, another in dance school, a third at school at Mia’s alma mater, Boston College, and her lone son still in high school.  She writes LGBTQ romance when not editing National Honor Society essays, offering opinions on college and law school applications, helping to create dance bios, and reviewing English papers. Her husband of twenty-three years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about this, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young people and their relationships. She has a great affinity for the tortured hero. There is, at a minimum, one in each book. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with tales of said tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Evernight Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Harmony Ink Press, and CoolDudes Publishing for providing her with alternate places to stash her stories.

A social liberal, Mia cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
