Blurb: Avery Hextall, a junior architect at a prestigious firm, is thrilled when his design is chosen for a new performing-arts center—even if it means working closely with his insufferably uptight project manager, Malin Lacroix. When a chance encounter in the boss’s office proves that Lacroix is anything but cold, Avery is determined to learn more about the real man beneath the aloof veneer.

Despite their growing attraction and their increasingly kinky encounters, the enigmatic Malin remains as emotionally distant as ever. Worse, Avery’s friends are convinced Malin thinks of Avery as a dirty secret and nothing more—a secret that might destroy both of their careers.

But the real secret is a single moment in time that haunts Malin and keeps him from committing to the life he wants with Avery. In order to move on, Avery must help Malin come to terms with the tragedy in his past before they can work on building a future together.

Review: Avery Hextal is a new architect trying to gain a name in a field crowded with extremely talented competition. His designs keep getting rejected, and while he isn’t in danger of losing his job, frustration gets the better of him and he rushes into the boss’ office after still another pass on his work.

Malin LaCroix is the boss who keeps rejecting Avery’s work. He’s aloof, arrogant, abrasive, straight, and not one to deal lightly with having his ordered world disturbed by anyone—let alone by someone who so blatantly breaks all boundary rules. Despite this obvious breach of office protocol, Malin tries to give Avery direction and tries to get him to shepherd his work more wisely.

After one particularly abrasive encounter, Avery makes a sexual advance that takes them both by surprise. This blows up into a relationship of sorts that explores Avery’s need for approval and Malin’s need to control everything in his world. The Dom/sub dynamic drives the two of them to do things they never considered, but is it this really what they both want and need?

This story gives us the process of growing relationships. Over the course of the book, Avery learns to make new friends and to accept that sometimes you don’t need to control something until you crush it. Malin learns that control is good for many things, including sex, but not so useful for real emotions. They both give up the ghost of the past. Malin has secret losses and Avery has a string of broken affairs that need to be forgotten. The book explores the dynamic between the two men deeply and the payoff is very satisfying to the reader.

Derrick McClain’s narration is among the best I’ve heard in a long time, and this one is not to be missed. Regular buyers of audio in the M/M genre should be looking for his name attached to anything. The honeyed tones of his voice make a story truly come alive. The action is read perfectly, with as few errors as those who have been in the voice game far longer produce. Do yourself a favor and pick up the book because the story is rich, but also because the voice work here is exemplary. Don’t shy away from this one because of the content. It is handled well and explained confidently by the author, and translated into spoken words expertly by the narrator.

This book is a definite buy for the story, but especially for the narration. Pick it up as soon as you can.
