Blurb: Dissatisfied in his relationship and his life, Mark is on the brink of having an affair. On the night of the worm moon he awakens to discover that he is being held captive in an underground tomb by the ghost of Victorian poet Seymour Mortimer. Mortimer shares his tale of woe and the regret he still suffers by failing to risk everything to be with Piotr, his true love. Seymour has until sunrise to convince Mark not to sabotage the relationship without doing his utmost to make it work. If he fails, Seymour will be doomed to suffer until the next worm moon.

Review: Mark seems to be discontent in his relationship with his partner, Pratt. He starts an affair with an old roommate of Pratt’s, but that’s just what it is, an affair and nothing more. Pratt appears to be content in their relationship, and even though Mark hints that Pratt has been having affairs too, I felt that was maybe just Mark’s insecurity. When Pratt leaves for a conference, Mark heads out to meet up with Randy, the man he’s been seeing on the side.

Mark and Pratt have moved into a bigger apartment to give each other more space, one that overlooks a cemetery. It’s the evening of the worm moon, when courses of other lives can cross—while Mark is in the basement, something goes amiss and he finds himself bound below the cemetery and facing Seymour Mortimer.

Seymour was a budding poet in 1880. At one of his lectures he sees a young man in the audience, Piotr. Even though Seymour is married and has children, he eventually falls in love with Piotr. But Seymour can never make the choice that would be right for him, and he tells his heartbreaking story to Mark in hopes that Mark learns something from it.

A Mystic Moon is told in the first person POV from Mark’s perspective, which makes it seem, because of his fears and insecurities, as though he’s not committed to his relationship with Pratt. This is my first time reading Owen Keehnen’s work, and I found this short story to be well written and entertaining. There’s also a little taste of eeriness in the meeting of Mark and Seymour, but it’s more about profound feelings of fear, the sort of fear that could very well destroy a relationship.
