Review: I will be honest in saying I didn’t read the first edition of Dare to Love Forever. I actually saw the second book in this series was out and decided I couldn’t really read that until I read the first book, and lucky me, Dare to Love Forever was up for review so I snagged it. And boy, am I glad I did—I already have book two waiting jump into.
This is the second novel from this author I have read, and I have to say that I am amazed at Jake C. Wallace’s ability to craft such amazing suspenseful stories with detailed world building and dimensional characters. Dare to Love Forever takes place in an alternate reality where vampires have been known of by humans for a long time, and are treated as less-than by the human population. They have their own policing system in place in the New Vampire Justice (NVJ), and rigid guidelines and laws have been enacted on biting, consuming blood, and vampire rights in general. There are different forms of vampires, but, for the most part, they are generally like humans—other than the need to consume blood. The blood doesn’t even require a bite, and, in fact, it is generally frowned upon to bite a human unless it is in a specific and approved setting, so most vampires only purchase synthetic blood for their sustenance.
The story begins at a blood bank where a malnourished Carson breaks in for sustenance before he bites a human in his hunger. See, Carson is one of those “different” vampires, one of the rarest in that is he Tabula Rosa, and essentially puts the recipient of hit bite into a catatonic state. He is on the run and things aren’t looking so good… especially when he gets caught trying to steal synthetic blood, which, under law, is a death sentence.
Enter Lincoln, another “different” vampire who has abilities all his own. He is the commander in charge of the NVJ unit which catches Carson red handed, and then things get crazy. So begins a suspenseful, action packed, fast-paced, incredible story which I thoroughly reveled in.
The fast-paced plot of this story held my attention and kept me consuming page after page well into the night (and, if I am honest, early morning). I was completely captivated by where the story took me and had several “didn’t see that coming” moments that blew me away as the story unfolded. Nothing is as it seems, and just when you think you know what’s about to happen, everything changes. Finally, when the climax hits and all the pieces form together, it makes perfect sense.
The story had an insta-chemistry element that progressed very quickly into love, but it worked in this particular plotline. The mate-bond of sorts was definitely a different variation than I have read before, and I found it particularly fascinating, especially the effects of the bond on both Carson and Linc and the repercussions of the bond.
The characters, both primary and secondary, were fleshed-out and dimensional, each necessary to the advancement of the story and bringing out different emotions in the reader. The different personalities and dynamics were realistic between the MCs and secondary characters, particularly Linc and Max’s friendship and interactions.
If you are a fan of paranormal urban fantasy with a ton of suspense, intricate plot, and amazing world building, you will definitely like the first book in the New Vampire Justice series. I know I couldn’t put it down.
