Guest Post: Catch and Release by BA Tortuga

Meet Dakota

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and a sucker for a hard-case.

I fell in love with Dakota the second I met him.

It’s always weird when I have to introduce new characters to the world because you have to straddle that fine line between spoiling and letting you understand how much I love these boys.

Dakota, though, I have to share him with you.

So, what can I tell you? This is a man who is leaving prison after serving more than a decade for rape. He’s a little guy, a tough guy that worked the laundry. Someone who expects to walk out of Huntsville prison and be shot by a family that’s furious that he’s free.

Thing is, he’s always said he didn’t do it.

One way or the other, Dakota did the time, and he’s more than a little broken. It says a lot about his life before prison that he has no one to come pick him up when he gets out of jail but a pen pal named Sage.

Oh, y’all. Sage. See, he’s from book one, The Terms of Release. He was my first love,  at least when it comes to broken ex-cons, and I knew if Dakota started out friends with him, Dakota might have a chance.

Dakota is probably the poorest character I’ve ever written, too. It’s hard to imagine someone who literally has nothing. Just the clothes on his back. That was the thing about Dakota, though. He was willing to open up and tell me all about it.

He wasn’t quite as willing to open up to Jayden at first. Jayden took me longer to get to know. When I’m writing a book, I ask myself what is this guy getting out of it? What is he learning? How is he growing. I swear y’all, I was a long ways into the book before I figured out what Jayden’s prison was, and how maybe Dakota could help set him free, too.

Have I said too much? Maybe I have, but these boys… of they make my heart happy.

Much love, y’all.

About the Book

The Release Series: Book Three

Dakota Landry just got out of prison after twelve years. If anyone can understand how that feels, it’s his new friend, Sage, who is determined to help him get used to life on the outside—and believes Dakota didn’t commit the crime he was in for.

Jayden Wilson is a former prosecutor who agrees to look into the case at the request of Sage’s lover, Adam. He sets out to prove Dakota is just another “innocent” ex-con, but once they meet, Jayden is more and more convinced Dakota just didn’t do what everyone thinks he did.

Trouble follows Dakota, and nothing is easy as he struggles to figure out how to live, now that he has choices. And Jayden isn’t sure how Dakota, or any lover for that matter, fits into his life. Their path from friendship to romance is a slow one, but Dakota begins to believe he deserves a chance at life, and Jayden falls a little more for Dakota every day. Now they just need to tell each other how they feel.

  1. I got to review this story for TNA and I have to say it was great. I liked that Jayden and Dakota took the time to get to know one another. Sage is one in a million. I think the series should be named after him. He’s always in the midst of things and plays matchmaker. Thanks for a great read and new and returning characters.
