Blurb: Can two Terran Alliance Marines come to term with impending parenthood?
In the distant future, human kind has spread out into the universe–way out. Among the Terran Alliance Marines assigned to a distant sector is Caden Roth, a medic, and pilot Benjamin Magnys.
Caden and Ben meet when Ben is injured during an alien raider attack. Ben is from Gaddo, a colony so remote and with such extreme environmental conditions, that the colonists there were forced to alter their genome in order to survive and to ensure a healthy gene pool.
After the kind of bad day that only emergency medical people can have, Caden and Ben meet again for a drink. One thing leads to another and they end up in bed together, which eventually evolves into a fledgling relationship. However, antibiotics and altered genetics throw the new lovers a definite twist.
Going home to tell the parents that they are pregnant is going to be interesting.

Review: Ben and Caden meet in dramatic fashion when Ben is injured after his fighter ship is hit by enemy fire, and Caden helps patch him up. The next time they meet, Caden has had an even worse day, and Ben offers a friendly ear and a drink. They have a good time and enjoy each other’s company, and well, one thing leads to another. They are becoming a steady thing, spending their free time together, and then Ben gets the shock of his life. It seems that he is pregnant even though he has been faithful with his birth control. Turns out that even in the future birth control isn’t foolproof! Who’da thunk it??
Before Ben has a chance to even wrap his head around this, he’s called out on an emergency. There have been enemy ships in the area, and he’s needed to go fight them off. Well, that little battle doesn’t go so well, and Ben is severely injured. Caden ends up finding him, and when he gets back to the base and the doctors find him after patching Ben up…well, let’s just say there are a lot of surprises in store for everyone.
Caden and Ben obviously will need to figure out what they are going to do, and it’s quite a surprise to Caden since he never really even thought about being a parent. Ben is apprehensive to be in a place where not many have ever known or seen a pregnant man before. He’s a little uncomfortable, but with Ben there, he’s happy as well.
There are some wonderful commentaries on the parents, and acceptance, and how things don’t always turn out how we think they will. There are conflicts with families, and love and support from colleagues and others—just like in every good story. And there are lovely little moments as Caden and Ben wade through the waters of a new relationship and the daunting realization that they are going to be parents. But with love, anything is possible.
I love A.R. Moler’s writing and have been a fan for some time. I’m not usually a sci-fi fan, but this wonderful story had so many great elements that I was enthralled from beginning to end. Mpreg can be really well or really horribly done; I haven’t read a lot that’s middle ground. In the Months That Follow is really well done. I liked Ben and Caden, both as individuals and as a couple. Caden handled the unexpected news in such a way that was quite believable. And then, he just kept showing what a good guy he was, which made me love him more. I was rooting for this couple all the way, and loved watching them get their HEA. This is a wonderful and engaging story that left me with a warm and happy feeling.
