Cody decides to get away from it all, and retreats to a secluded forest for some peace and quiet. But two days into his journey, he’s hit over the head as he’s emerging from his tent. When he wakes up, he discovers he’s tied to a chair in a dark room. He struggles against his bonds, and when he hears someone approaching, he begins to panic.
Who kidnapped him? What do they want from a man who has nothing left?
Review: I think Wayne Mansfield, as a writer, likes to push the boundaries of what we feel is “acceptable” or how far can he go before it’s “too much”. This story is no exception, really. Cody is a forty-one-year-old man who has lost his job, his house, he has no money, and no friends or family to speak of. After the auction of his house, he clears his debts and then heads to the woods to clear his head. He has a lot of thinking to do about where he wants his life to go from this point onward.
Baz escaped to the woods after a personal tragedy. Actions he took in the life he left behind have left him paranoid and twitchy. When Cody invades his forest home, Baz takes him captive till Cody can prove he isn’t out to get him.
Waking up tied to a chair, with blood on his scalp, is horrifying and disturbingly stimulating to Cody—especially when he gets a look at his captor. Being kept naked and tied is oddly freeing for Cody, and getting to know the man behind the abduction is even better. His head keeps telling him to run at the first opportunity, but his heart is getting involved and it is at cross purposes with his common sense. When events force more violence, Cody chooses his heart. But as readers, we are left with a bit of uncertainty. Has Cody made the right decision?
A romance blooms, a HEA is established, and the audience is left with a lot of questions and an unsettled feeling. Provocative, this is an incredibly short story. It took me roughly forty-five minutes to read, and that’s because I took my time. If you enjoy stories that leave you feeling a little off kilter as to why you like it, when it had questionable morality right from the get-go, then this is a novella for you.
